Member Appreciation "Mask-erade" Barbecue: A Safe & Enjoyable Evening!
Check Out This Year's Feature Video
|
|
It was different than in years past, but the 112th "Annual Dinner" took place Wednesday evening as a safely-distanced, casual gathering at St. Florian Hall. There was no speaker or program, and no awards were handed out, rather ALL local businesses and organizations on hand were the "honorees" of the evening. The weather was perfect for the indoor-outdoor event that included bonfires, s'mores, DJ Ralph, the Ambassador cornhole competition, local beer and wine vendors and a great spread of barbecued chicken and pork with all the fixins'. A highlight of the evening was this year's feature video presentation by Pierce Media that showcased the six 2020 Gold Level sponsors. Click the button above to take a look.
"The Chamber would like to thank all of the volunteers, sponsors, participants and guests who went above and beyond to help make this important fundraiser doable," Chamber president, Tricia Maple commented. "Our members were so happy to gather safely and feel some sort of normalcy and we were excited to help make that happen."
A special thanks to this year's sponsors:

How America's Largest Puzzle Factory
Makes 2 Million Puzzles a Month
From Business Insider: "When the pandemic locked people inside, Buffalo Games saw an unprecedented spike in demand for its puzzles. But just as demand was taking off, the company's Buffalo, NY, factory was shut down under New York State COVID-19 mandate. As the largest manufacturer of puzzles in North America, the company had to get creative. First, Buffalo Games sourced from overseas and then ramped up manufacturing stateside when the factory was able to reopen in May. Since May, the company has doubled production, now making 2 million puzzles a month. Business Insider visits the factory to see how Buffalo Games did it."

Chamber Supported Workforce Bill Clears Ohio Legislature
A few weeks back, the Ohio Senate and Ohio House passed House Bill 614, which among other things, would create a council to review the administration of unemployment compensation and attempts to alleviate the issues experienced by the unemployment compensation system due to massive increase in claims in the first and second quarter of 2020. Additionally, HB 614 included over $650 million of CARES Act funding that will be going to assist local governments. The Ohio Chamber provided interested party testimony on the original bill both in the House and the Senate.
One other provision included in HB 614 is Senate Bill 181; legislation that will create a template for workforce-education partnership programs. The Ohio Chamber lent our support to SB 181 previously in the Ohio Senate last October. As was stated in our letter of support regarding SB 181, consistently, we hear from our members that they are struggling to fill workforce shortages. The approach in SB 181 has the potential to fill these shortages in a creative way, and potentially drive down the burden student loans put on individuals pursuing higher education.

As the Cloud Grows, So Does the
Focus on Its Security
Every day more data, applications, and computing power—almost everything we do digitally—is moving to the Cloud. With so much of our digital life dependent on Cloud computing, its security is no longer a side issue, but a top priority.
To delve deeper into this issue, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Cyber, Intelligence, and Supply Chain Security Division hosted a discussion today on Cloud cybersecurity as part of its Now+Next webinar series.
Despite all the hype, Cloud computing is still only getting started and has plenty of room for growth. According to Nataraj Nagaratnam, chief technology officer at IBM Cloud Security, 80% of businesses store data and run applications in-house, usually on corporate servers. Today, just 20% of their data and services are in the Cloud, but Nagaratnam said the transition to the Cloud will continue to gather pace.
“It’s not a question of if, but when. It’s a journey,” Nagaratnam said. “That’s still 80% that’s untapped, either because of complexity in modernizing existing applications or because of security and compliance needs.”

Leadership Is Language
by David L. Marquet
It's time to ditch the industrial age playbook of leadership. In Leadership Is Language, you'll learn how choosing your words can dramatically improve decision-making and execution on your team. Marquet outlines six plays for all leaders, anchored in how you use language:
* Control the clock, don't obey the clock: Pre-plan decision points and give your people the tools they need to hit pause on a plan of action if they notice something wrong.
* Collaborate, don't coerce: As the leader, you should be the last one to offer your opinion. Rather than locking your team into binary responses ("Is this a good plan?"), allow them to answer on a scale ("How confident are you about this plan?")
* Commit, don't comply: Rather than expect your team to comply with specific directions, explain your overall goals and get their commitment to achieving it one piece at a time.
* Complete, not continue: If every day feels like a repetition of the last, you're doing something wrong. Articulate concrete plans with a start and end date to align your team.
* Improve, don't prove: Ask your people to improve on plans and processes, rather than prove that they can meet fixed goals or deadlines. You'll face fewer cut corners and better long-term results.
* Connect, don't conform: Flatten hierarchies in your organization and connect with your people to encourage them to contribute to decision-making.

Today in History
Brutus dies by suicide
- October 23, 42 B.C. -
From History.com: Marcus Junius Brutus, a leading conspirator in the assassination of Julius Caesar, dies by suicide after his defeat at the second battle of Philippi.
Two years before, Brutus had joined Gaius Cassius Longinus in the plot against the Roman dictator Julius Caesar, believing he was striking a blow for the restoration of the Roman Republic.
However, the result of Caesar’s assassination was to plunge the Roman world into a new round of civil wars, with the Republican forces of Brutus and Cassius vying for supremacy against Octavian and Mark Antony.
After being defeated by Antony in a battle at Philippi, Greece, in October 42 B.C., Cassius killed himself.
On October 23, Brutus’ army was crushed by Octavian and Antony at a second encounter at Philippi, and Brutus took his own life.
Antony and Octavian soon turned against each other, and in 27 B.C. the Roman Republic was lost forever with the ascendance of Octavian as Augustus Caesar, the first emperor of Rome.
