Arguably, COVID-19's greatest disruption has been its impact on the academic experience for students, their families, teachers and school administrators. Safety precautions necessitated remote learning, which raised a myriad of equity issues from child care and parental oversight capability to the technology and nutrition "haves" and "have nots." Faculty anxiety heightened as they pivoted to new forms of teaching and lived in fear of being forced back into classrooms before it was safe. Just as vaccines became accessible and hope appeared on the horizon, the Delta Variant emerged, posing new threats to both the vaccinated and unvaccinated, school-age children comprising the largest sector of the latter. This week's Online Briefing for Faith Leaders, hosted by the San Francisco Interfaith Council, welcomes back San Francisco Department of Public Health Acting Government Affairs Liaison Ana Validzic, who will address these issues, as well as the City's updated health guidance for schools, as public and religiously affiliated academic institutions return to in-person learning.
