NEWS & NOTES
Policies & Procedures

WMS's COVID-19 policies are based on guidelines from the CDC and Delaware's Office of Child Care Licensing. We continue to monitor those sources for information to adjust our policies and practices as needed.
COVID-19 Testing Events

WMS is strongly recommends that students be tested for COVID-19 monthly (unless your child has symptoms or exposure is suspected). Results should be sent to Nurse Kathy for your child's health records.

Wednesday, September 23
  • East Side Charter School - 2:30-6 p.m. (walk-up)

Thursday, September 24
  • Judy Johnson Park - 2-6 p.m.

Friday, September 25
  • Seeds of Greatness Bible Church - New Castle - 2-7 p.m.

Full list of upcoming test sites: nccde.org/2011/COVID-19-Resources (Please visit this page to confirm that there have been no changes to the schedule above before going to your testing location.)
Flu Shots
In past years, WMS has brought an organization to the school to offer flu shots to parents, students and staff. This year, due to licensing guidelines that prohibit outside visitors, we will not be to offer shots onsite.

Per the CDC: "Getting a flu vaccine is more important than ever during 2020-2021 to protect yourself and the people around you from flu, and to help reduce the strain on healthcare systems responding to the COVID-19 pandemic."

Visit vaccinefinder.org to schedule a flu shot at a location that is convenient for your family. Thank you for helping to keep our community healthy!
Kindergarten through Eighth-Grade Absences
Our policy, as shared in the parent handbook, states that excused absences fall into the following categories:

  • Illness or treatment for an illness
  • Doctor’s appointment
  • Communicable disease
  • Death in family or circle of friends
  • Religious holiday
  • Personal/family emergency
  • Suspension from school
  • Legal business

Children who are absent for any of the above stated reasons will be permitted to make up the work they miss.

During this time, we recognize that families may choose to keep their children at home for longer periods of time than are typically necessary. In those cases, the absences will be excused and the above policy continues as stated. If a child is going to be absent for more than one day while awaiting information regarding returning to school* or is required to quarantine by the Division of Public Health due to a close contact COVID-19 exposure, the classroom teachers will work with Cristin Lettich, the Curriculum and Instruction Coordinator, to determine how to support instruction during their absence, which may include assignments posted on Google Classroom, materials to be picked up at WMS, or Zoom sessions with their class as deemed appropriate.

*During this time we recognize that decisions are made in consultation with health-care professionals, such as your child’s primary care physician, WMS’s school nurse or the Delaware Division of Public Health.
Spotlight on Outdoor Learning
Primary students have discovered that a piece of chalk can transform a plain area of blacktop into an active game!
Lower Elementary students have been busy learning about, designing and building their own nests in the woods as part of their cultural studies.
In honor of the International Day of Peace, Upper Elementary students created paper cranes and hung them outside their classroom.
The Wednesday Weekly shares WMS news and events that are relevant to the families in our community.
