Dear 8th Grade Parents,

This year our 8th grade students will be embarking on a learning and leadership retreat to the H.E. Butt Foundation Camp located in the beautiful Texas Hill Country. They will stay in the Linnet’s Wings camp which accommodates 85 people. Lifeguard services/waterfront safety will be provided by The Expedition School in Austin. We will depart TST on Tuesday, March 31st at 7:30 a.m. and return on Friday, April 3rd around 4 p.m. The expected cost is $175/student and will include all meals. Students will gather in the Commons before our departure for a quick breakfast and last minute instructions.

The purpose of this trip is to help our students further develop their leadership skills and bond as a class before they begin their Upper School journey. In January, students will divide themselves into groups and will be responsible for planning the daily activities, preparing menus for meals, (which they will later help prepare under supervision), organizing and running games, and organizing the clean-up schedule. This will be done under the watchful eyes of Mrs. McCreary and Mrs. King, and it will offer them a wonderful chance to learn about themselves and others, become more self-reliant, and explore new things outside their normal environment in beautiful surroundings. Camp activities will include hiking, fishing, canoeing, and playing group sports. At the conclusion of each day, students will gather around a campfire for fellowship (and roasted marshmallows).

We hope this trip will be a wonderful experience, and that it will help develop our students into thoughtful, confident stewards of the environment as well as joyful learners.
