More on Masks and Vaccines…
On July 27th, the CDC recommended that fully vaccinated people once again wear masks indoors in areas with high COVID transmission. Alameda County is now experiencing substantial spread. There is a new UC-wide COVID vaccination policy that delineates requirements for us all and you can read about the specifics for BCH Oakland here.
Though putting the mask back on indoors and in crowded outdoor settings (per new state and local guidance) feels like a minor step back, it is a must due to the delta coronavirus variant. The delta strain makes up a majority of the variants circulating in the US today but most vaccinated individuals are not susceptible to hospitalization. However, the increased transmissibility even among the vaccinated has got our attention. Protect yourself, your family, and your colleagues by wearing your PPE and taking care to minimize exposure both at work and in the community. Speaking of masks, make sure to put your figurative “oxygen mask” on first. Take some time off if you can. Fill your tank so we can regroup and see this thing through over the coming weeks. Hopefully, this will be a short surge.
Let’s celebrate Ted Chaconas who is retiring later this month after decades of valiant service to our hospital. After earning his undergraduate degree from UC Davis and his medical degree from UC San Diego, he completed his residency and chief residency in pediatrics at BCH Oakland. He has served as medical director of the hospitalist group, director of graduate medical education and the pediatric residency program, president of the Pediatric Multispecialty Medical Group, chair of the Medical Staff Department of Medicine, and since 2019 as chief medical officer for the Oakland campus. Please join me in congratulating our friend and colleague on a job well done. We wish him well in the next chapter.

The focus of the BCH Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Initiative is to dismantle systemic racism within BCH by taking action to insure that policies, institutional practices, cultural representations and other norms no longer reinforce and perpetuate racial group inequity for Blacks, Indigenous and People of Color. Patients and families and other groups in the workforce, including LGBTQ+ are negatively impacted within the current problematic climate. For more information, please feel free to reach out to me, our program manager Henry Ocampo at henry.ocampo@ucsf.edu, or visit our website https://diversitybch.ucsf.edu/.
