Because Things Grow: Hope
Last year, my holiday postcard wished friends and family “a twisted, imperfect New Year.” Was I psychic?

And while I certainly did not wish 2020 on anyone, I am still of the mind that twisted and imperfect makes for a life LIVED. Twisted and imperfect is the dark, rich compost from which things will grow.

Writer Neil Gaiman echoed that same sentiment in 2011 when he wrote:

“I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You're doing things you've never done before, and more importantly, you're Doing Something.”
In 2020, that DOING SOMETHING has required us to dig deep, to root around for those things that will sustain us through change, fear, solitude, loss; those things that will give us hope through the shadowy unknown of what comes next.
But rest assured,
something does come next.
“It’s like the long winters of the past, when the granaries would slowly empty and people started to fear spring would never come again: during the dark days, you do things. You repair your tools. You enjoy each other’s company. You sing old songs and write new ones. You make ropes and nets and weave blankets and do anything you don’t have time for in the summer. And it’s hard to do it and hard to stay hopeful, but that way, when spring comes — and spring does come, spring will come — you can start working in the fields with a working plow and good ropes and a head full of songs.”
— Tumbler Post
I suppose that is my wish for you in the coming year…reliable tools to help you grow new things, good ropes to pull you along when things get rough, and a head full of songs to keep you company.

Stay healthy, stay kind, be well.

With love,
Spring Will Come…
And until then…
