New & Prospective Volunteer Orientation
|
|
Audio-Reader is hosting an orientation for new and prospective volunteers on
January 22nd from Noon - 1 pm
(bring your lunch, we will provide dessert and drinks). If you are a new volunteer, or know someone who is interested in volunteering, please invite them to this event.
The orientation will introduce the many ways Audio-Reader uses volunteers to fulfill our mission. Prospective volunteers will also meet staff, tour the building, and learn more about Audio-Reader history. We will also cover the variety of services we provide to the blind, visually impaired, and print disabled individuals in Kansas and western Missouri. At the end of orientation those interested in a reading assignment will be able to sign up for an audition.

Meet a Listener: Marta Brown

Enterprising, creative Marta Brown grew up in the 40’s as an only child. Marta, now 78, remained single throughout her life. Marta is positive, creative, and has lived her life with an entrepreneurial spirit. A native of St. Joseph, Missouri, Marta attended Platt Guard Business School, studied early childhood at Missouri Western, then studied cosmetology at Banks Beauty Academy.
Marta then operated two businesses simultaneously. She operated a salon from the 1950’s until 2000, in which she employed several staff. At the same time, she opened Kiddies Korner Nursery School, which she operated for 28 years. The fact that Marta was born blind in one eye never stopped her from doing anything she wanted to do. But in the early 1990s, she began experiencing visual challenges with her remaining functioning eye.
Marta worked as long as she could, but realized that progressive vision loss would require her to set her sights on new horizons. Somehow, in 1996, Marta and Audio-Reader found each other. “I don’t remember how Audio-Reader came into my life,” Marta mused. “I just know that when I needed it, it was there for me.” “Since I live alone and no longer drive, Audio-Reader is great company. Just about anything that’s out there that can make your life go on and make your life better, that’s just great. Audio-Reader does that for me.” She especially enjoys the afternoon programming, the mysteries, and oh yes, the hometown newspapers.
One thing does mystify her. “How in the world can those volunteers read all that material? There isn’t a time when I think, ‘Oh, I’ve heard that already.’ All that new, fresh material, every day, how do they do it?”
Her favorite volunteer reader? “No favorite,” she says with a smile in her voice. “I love them all.”
Marta has a message for all of the Audio-Reader volunteers. “I appreciate all of you. You all do a great job.”

Audio Description Training

Do you love the Theater, are you passionate about accessibility? This may be the gig for you! Jen Nigro, former Coordinator of Volunteers for Audio-Reader, will facilitate a training for people interested in becoming an Audio-Describer AND a brush up for current describers. Training cost for new volunteers is $15, fee will be waived for those who already audio describe for Audio-Reader.
Audio Description is an accessibility tool that enhances a theater performance or other visual event for people with vision loss. An Audio Description volunteer describes the visual elements of a performance, display or event using succinct, colorful language. You might call it a play-by-play for your favorite play! Describers describe sets, costumes, action and visual jokes as they happen. This is done without talking over the actors on stage. Current venue relationships include Theatre Lawrence and The Lied Center in Lawrence and Starlight Theatre in the Kansas City area.
