Dear Family in Christ,

Morning Prayer on Friday March 13th was the very last day we held service inside the Chapel, who would have ever thought that thirteen weeks later we would still be hosting services on line. The good news is we are progressing forward. With the State of NJ reopening, we are now in receipt of the Diocesan requirements for reopening. The vestry and I are going through those requirements carefully and will meet this Sunday to discuss options and obstacles. My main concern is the health and welfare of all of you.
The requirements at the current will need careful planning, implementation and oversight. We will need volunteers to assist, but even before we get there, we need to hear from ALL of you. What is your comfort level in attending service? Will you come? Will you serve? Will you volunteer?

Know that when we do decide to open, things will look and feel differently than we are used too. We will be required to wear masks and keep a six foot distance, there will only be Eucharist in one kind, no choir is permitted, or wind instruments at this time. There is much to consider.

There is no mandatory reopening date from the diocese. That date is dependant on our unique needs. Thus far, churches with larger buildings are deciding to open more quickly, while churches with smaller buildings are choosing to remain closed for the summer. Each have to navigate their individual needs. Your input is very much needed.

As you know St. Mary's This n' That Thrift Shop has been closed for some time. The Diocese has granted us permission to follow the State and Local guidlines for retail businesses to re-open. Lillian and I visited with Debbie and Debra today and are happy to announce the Thrift Shop will be reopening this Monday June 15, 2020.

I look forward to hearing from each of you.
May the Peace and Love of God be with you always!

In Christ,

Music with David
Dear Friends,

From now on I’ll be writing this weekly article, to
keep in touch with everyone and offer some thoughts on music.
Recent events have changed the way we must do certain things, and adapting to adverse circumstances can be very challenging, I must admit. I take comfort though in knowing that we’re all in this together, and I’m very grateful to be part of Saint Mary’s community, especially in these uncertain times.

I’m very much looking forward to the day when we can reconvene in person. Until then, we must all do our best to adapt. Part of my adaptation, interestingly enough, includes playing organ music on the piano.

One of the things I love most about playing the organ is that my feet do half the work for me. Now that I’m broadcasting from my apartment, my fingers have to pick up the slack. So my hands are a little busier now, but I’m grateful for the workout. It’s good for my technique, and it forces me to think about the music in new and different ways.

For this Sunday’s prelude I’ll be playing a fugue by George Frederic Handel, which was originally written for pedal-organ. I miss my feet already! The structure of a fugue is somewhat regimented at its beginning, but becomes quite flexible as the piece develops. I like this sense of balance and flexibility in its form. I chose this particular fugue for its drive and clarity of line, and also because I could successfully adapt it for the piano.

Hoping that everyone is well, and I’m wishing you all the best with your adaptations!

A Prayer for our Country
Almighty God, who hast given us this good land for our heritage: We humbly beseech thee that we may always prove ourselves a people mindful of thy favor and glad to do thy will. Bless our land with honorable industry, sound learning, and pure manners. Save us from violence, discord, and confusion; from pride and arrogance, and from every evil way. Defend our liberties, and fashion into one united people the multitudes brought hither out of many kindreds and tongues. Endue with the spirit of wisdom those to whom in thy Name we entrust the authority of government, that there may be justice and peace at home, and that, through obedience to thy law, we may show forth thy praise among the nations of the earth. In the time of prosperity, fill our hearts with thankfulness, and in the day of trouble, suffer not our trust in thee to fail; all which we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
