As the pandemic continues, the long-term care sector also continues to adapt. As nursing home leaders, your work continues to be exceptional in spite of significant challenges. Financial and insurance matters are top of the list of concerns, along with staffing shortages and new emergent concerns with the COVID variants and vaccine shortages. These can all feel overwhelming, but with clear focused action plans we can collectively lead through what the next months and year will bring.
What is happening in our own province will be further shaped by Federal intervention in long term care. Work on national standards for long term care is about to begin, the creation of a Federal insurance backstop for homes, national standards for personal support workers in a Federally delivered program, amendments to the Criminal Code of Canada to specifically identify this sector, are all being discussed and work for many are underway.
We can see this all with concern or we can see it as opportunity. Collectively, after speaking in the last few months with most of you, we know as a sector that change must happen. I believe the months and year ahead will be transformational for long term care, and our voice must be part of it. We will be engaging the sector further on collective opportunities for our voice to be heard.
Thanks for reading,

YOUR SUCCESS STORIES
The Working Mind Session in Nursing Homes
Since November, our four trainers, Vicki Caissie, Samantha Hachey, Jane Logan and Mélanie Martin, have had the opportunity to offer managers the Mental Health Commission of Canada’s session 6 times. A total of 145 managers, including department heads, were able to attend the online 1-day session.
Since January, the online training is also being offered to front-line employees. So far, approximately 30 employees have been trained and other training courses are to be expected with other homes in coming months.
Our The Working Mind team of facilitators was pretty busy in the past few months. The objectives of this mental health training include:
- Reduce the stigma associated with mental health.
- Promote mental health in your organization.
- Transform what participants think of mental health and mental illness and how they talk about it.
- Help participants recognize the indicators of mental health problems, for themselves and others.
- Allow participants to learn how to adapt in order to manage stress and mental health problems.

A Gesture for Resident's Families at Rexton Lions Nursing Home
This pandemic has been hard for everyone, including the families of our nursing home residents. With this in mind, Rexton Lions Nursing Home had a great idea to send a keepsake to the families. They hired a photographer to take photos of the resident’s hands, and wrote a short biography of the resident. A gift that will be treasured forever!

The Act of Human Kindness!
We all know that the pandemic has increased social isolation, and this is even more evident in long-term care facilities. Seeing this phenomenon, NAV Canada, one of the largest Air Navigation Service Providers, offered Foyer St.Thomas de la Vallée de Memramcook a couple iPads to help the residents remain connected to their families and friends. Mrs. Suzanne Dupuis, Training Administrator at NAV Canada, delivered their donation in person.
Paul Rossignol, Executive Director at Foyer St. Thomas de la Vallée de Memramcook would like to share this note: On behalf of all our employees, residents, members of the Board of Directors, and myself, we would like to thank NAV Canada for their great generosity.
A true act of human kindess.

PROJECTS & INITIATIVES
NBANH Claims Management Program
This is a reminder that NBANH launched a new Claims Management program in the fall of 2020. As a result of a business analysis, the program now incorporates a fee-for-service model as there is an increasing need for the management of Worker’s Compensation claims within the Nursing Home sector. Because the Disability Claims Coordinator is actively reviewing claims and their progress, they can identify early on if there are challenges with the return-to-work process.
If you are requesting Claims Management services, contact Samantha Hachey at 506-460-6262 or via email, shachey@nbanh.com. She will be able to explain the process and services that are available to you, as well as pricing.
