A Unique But Successful Annual Meeting
|
|
Dan House, FUUSB Board President
Thank you all who attended (or tried to attend) our annual meeting on June 7 via Zoom. The number of people involved to make that happen is far too long to list, but a heartfelt thank you goes out to all of them. Overall, we recognize that Zoom is not the ideal means for holding our annual meeting, but I am thankful we have it as an option.
As you all know, we had some technical glitches. Thank you for your patience and flexibility as we had to group more people together in pairs to allow as many people into the meeting as possible. For those of you who were not able to log into the meeting, I'm sorry for that glitch. We are unsure why Zoom restricted our meeting to 100 participants after we specifically set it up for 300.
Nevertheless, it was a successful meeting with some very excellent discussion and all items of business passed by unanimous or near-unanimous vote.
- Approval of the 2019 annual meeting minutes
- Election of the slate of candidates
- Board of Trustees
- Leandre Waldo, Secretary (2 years)
- Rodney Lowe, member at large (3 years)
- Rebecca Gurney, member at large (3 years)
- Hope Baker Carr, member at large (1 year)
- Treasurer
- Kameron McConnell, Treasurer (2 years)
- Nominating Team
- Suzy Haas (3 years)
- Chip Patullo (3 years)
- Travis Jones (3 years)
- Approval of a funding request from the Property Team for property maintenance projects
- Approval of the FUUSB annual budget for fiscal year 2020-2021
I hope to see you all in person for next year's annual meeting. But know that the FUUSB is financially healthy and continues to work toward our mission and vision. If you have any questions or comments about the annual meeting, please feel free to contact either Christina Fulton (
[email protected]) or Dan House (

Black Lives Matter Banner Repaired! |
|
The Racial Justice Team
Most of you will have received an email this past weekend about the Society's Black Lives Matter banner having been vandalized. We wanted to update you with the latest news about the banner. One of our neighbors took it upon themselves to repair our damaged banner with staples and packing tape. They contacted us recently saying, "Some friends and I decided we'd do a little repair of the flag last Friday evening. We sincerely hope this was the appropriate action to take and that, in doing so, it would condemn the damage done while communicating that we will not give up until this battle is won." Thanks to this effort, the banner stood for our Sunday afternoon vigil, damaged but made whole again. Christina and Rev. Tricia are both conveying our deep appreciation to this kind soul.
We will still, sometime in the coming weeks, replace the banner with a new one, which we will dedicate on Sunday, July 5th as originally planned. We'll share more details of that re-dedication ceremony as they become available.

Staying Connected
|
|
Sarah Russell
On
Sunday, June 14 at 12 p.m. the Membership Team will be holding a virtual "Staying Connected" gathering. "Staying Connected" is primarily intended for "newish" folks to get acquainted and learn a bit more about First UU Society. It is very informal; we simply go around the "room" introducing ourselves, collecting and answering questions.
We've hosted three of these gatherings so far; all were well-attended with positive feedback. We warmly invite you to join us via Zoom. We look forward to seeing you!

The Black Heritage of Burlington
|
|
Linda Cooper
Your Racial Justice Team brings you a Walking tour: The Black Heritage of Burlington, Saturday, June 27, 10:30 a.m.-noon. Take a walk along Archibald and Elmwood Streets with historian Elise Guyette to discover some of the African American history of the Old North End. As we walk and talk, we will encounter a former black church, a black-owned grocery store, the former home of black barbers who worked on Church St., a hotel that was once in the "Green Book" and more. Meet at the George and Elaine Little Park on the corner of North Winooski and Archibald. Elise Guyette is author of Discovering Black Vermont: African American Farmers in Hinesburg, 1790- 1890.
Please register at this link.
We are limiting this event to the first 20 who sign up, with a minimum age of 18, and ask that you bring some funds for a donation to our walk leader. We also ask that you wear a facial mask and maintain social distance throughout the event.

The Event Formerly Known as the 4th of July Community BBQ
|
|
Zoe Hart
Planning for the 4th of July Free Lunch continues. While we don't have a detailed volunteer plan yet, I can tell you now that we will need volunteers! Just to get you thinking about it, here are some of the types of volunteers we'll be looking for: Shoppers to help buy supplies (we'll give you a list and a gift card or reimburse you for the cost) the week before the 4th. Food prep volunteers to prepare lunch bags the day before and make sandwiches the morning of the event. Greeters and food servers to distribute bagged lunches to guests. Look for a volunteer sign-up sheet in the coming weeks.
Are you a face mask maker? We would like to have face masks to give out to anyone coming for lunch who doesn't have a mask. If you're able to make and donate some face masks, notify Zoe at [email protected] and we'll make arrangements to get them.

Justice & Outreach Leadership Transition
|
|
Zoe Hart
I'm pleased to announce that Gene Bergman has agreed to take over in the role of lay lead for our Justice & Outreach ministry area. Gene's passion for FUUSB and his passion for justice will serve us well in this time when there is so much justice work to do. These same passions mean that Gene is even busier in retirement than he was when he was working. As a result, we are seeking a co-lead to share the role with Gene. If this is a role you might consider or if you'd like to suggest someone you think would be good for the role, please contact either Gene Bergman (
[email protected]) or Zoe Hart (
[email protected]).

Remember to Lock Your Vehicles |
|
Christina Fulton, Director of Operations & Finance
Just a reminder: with summer weather here and more businesses opening up on Church Street, it is important to remember to roll up your windows and lock your vehicles while parking in the Meeting House lot and oval. It only takes a minute for someone to get into your car and possibly take something or do damage.

Reminder: Angel Fund
|
|
Christina Fulton, Director of Operations & Finance
Many members of our Society are unable to make a pledge for the 2020/2021 fiscal year because of the pandemic. Some have lost their jobs and some are just too unsure of their financial situation to make that type of commitment.
We also know there are other members who are more financially secure right now and might be able to make a gift in addition to their pledge, to help cover the loss of pledge income we're seeing in these uncertain times.
So with a starter gift from a very generous member, we have created the Angel Fund for one-time gifts to help replace lost pledge income due to the pandemic. Our hope is that members who are unable to pledge will feel some sense of relief knowing that the Society will not be negatively affected by their inability to pledge at this time.
To date, we have raised just over $7,000 from 40 different contributors!
We hope you will consider making a gift to the Angel Fund. Gifts can be made by sending a check to the Society with "Angel" in the memo line or by giving online from our website:
uusociety.org/donate
. Please contact Christina at
[email protected]
if you have any questions. Thank you so much for your generosity!
