Dear SMV Families,
All Catholic Schools around the country will be celebrating Catholic Schools Week, starting January 26
th
. This is a time where we stop and realize what a wonderful blessing it is to be able to speak and live out our faith on a daily basis with our children. We can truly be disciples of Jesus living out the Gospel and witnessing to those around us.
This year's theme is "Catholic Schools Learn, Serve, Lead, Succeed" . We will begin with our annual Chili Chomp and Book Fair tomorrow night. Our Open House will be on Sunday from 8:00-11:00 . Please plan on stopping by to visit your child's classroom and our Jr. High Science Fair. The Boy Scouts will be serving a pancake breakfast in the cafeteria. Come join us! We will be giving tours to prospective families. Please encourage any family who is interested in coming to St. Mary's to attend. You are our best marketing tool - help us spread the word! Click here to see all the great things that are happening next week.
There is so much excitement around our upcoming musical, "Getting to Know The Sound of Music". So much extra time goes into planning and rehearsing -- it literally takes months. Thank you to Mrs. Kesler, Ms. Pospyhalla and Ms. Gleason, our co-directors. We can't wait! Please check out Mrs. Kesler's class website. The team will be posting all music, choreography, rehearsal, and performance information weekly. Check back for pictures, too! If you have any questions please email them at
musicalteam@stmaryeg.org
.
February 13
th
is our 2
nd
parent/teacher conference of the school year. School is dismissed at 11:00. Conferences are from 2:00-6:00 that evening. Please use sign-up genius to sign up for a conference. A conference can be requested by you or the classroom teacher.
The Bricks 4 Kidz program will be back again this year for students in K5-5th. It is a six week program starting in March. More information will be coming.
If you have a 9th grader, the 9th Grade Survey will be coming out in early February. On Monday, March 2nd from 5:30-7:30 the 9th graders will be invited to a pizza party for a mini-reunion and talk about how SMV has prepared them for high school.
Applications and supporting documentation must be completed and submitted by May 1, 2020 to be considered. Families will be notified of available funds by June 15, 2020.
Just a reminder that there is no school on Friday, February 14 and Monday, February 17. The teachers will be here working on professional development.
Faithfully Yours,
Mrs. Mary Tretow
Gr 6 girls received SMV-themed hair ties from their Buddies from last year, this year's 1st graders. They earned their purple flower petal patch and wanted to honor their "Be a Sister to Every Girl Scout" pledge.

Pancake Breakfast
Please join us on Open House, January 26th, for a pancake breakfast. This breakfast is hosted by the Boy Scouts every year. It begins at 8:00 a.m and goes until 11:00 a.m. The cost is $6/adults and $5/children 6-12 and under 5 is free or $25 per family.
Six Flags Read to Succeed
In past years, some of your children in K5-grade 6 may have participated in Six Flags Read to Succeed. This program requires students to keep a log of their minutes read at home, excluding school work. When six hours (360 minutes) of reading is reached, they receive a ticket to Six Flags theme park. The program is now changed. It is no longer administered through school. If you are interested in having your children participate, go to sixflags.com/books
Use the school code AGXXE for all grades (K5-grade 6) and register your children. You will enter their reading minutes online and submit on or before April 17. You will then receive the Six Flag ticket by e-mail.
Questions? Please contact Miss Benson in the library.
MakerSpace
The Makerspace is looking for empty Kleenex boxes and tape. Please send them to the school office.

Elementary Forensics is coming soon! Save the date! Friday, March 20th will be our in-house Forensics Fest from 9:00am-noon. Third, fourth, and fifth graders are encouraged to participate. Coaching sessions will be offered after school on Fridays (dates to be determined). Information will be coming home soon!

CALLING ALL BOOK LOVERS!!
Scholastic Book Fair will be coming to SMV in January! Your child will be able to preview and browse through the books with their classes and create a wish list. Sales will begin January 24 during the Chili Chomp from 5:30-7:30, during our Open House on Sunday, January 26
from 8-11, and during recess times on January 27-29
from 11-12:05. Cash and credit cards (with an adult) will be accepted (and there is tax on all sales). Keep an eye out for the book fair flyer, wish lists and times for those dates.
Scholastic Book Fair Teacher Wish List
Each year at the Scholastic Book Fair, families have the opportunity to purchase books from the teacher wish lists. Teachers browse the book fair and select books that would be used in the classroom. Look for the teacher wish list table and consider purchasing one of the books as a gift for your child's classroom. At check out, tell the cashier that it is a wish list book. You will get a gift sticker to fill out and then we will see that the teacher receives the book. Thank you for considering this fun and easy way to enhance our classrooms.
Dine Out Night
Alioto's will donate 10% of food sales to SMV's Auction.
Date: February 3rd and 4th. Please click
here for more information. Hope to see you all there.

Last month, school families once again generously contributed to the SMV Angel Tree. It is absolutely amazing what this ministry is able to accomplish- gifts to: 277 students at St. Adalbert Catholic Grade School, men from the Guest House, children of St. Rose food Pantry, 23 retired School Sisters of Notre Dame, and 17 of our own parish families in need. During what is often the busiest season of the year, Diane Bodalski has graciously chaired this project for the past 7 years. Diane formerly worked in the SMV library both as a volunteer and as an assistant to Ms. Benson. Her favorite thing about SMV is the wonderful foundation it provided for her 4 children- all who live in different parts of the country and are quite successful. She is passionate about the Angel Tree Ministry because, "each year there's something that touches me and makes it all worth it-- a hand-drawn card for an SMV student to a St. Adalbert's student or a thank you note from the director of the food pantry." SMV would like to thank you, Mrs. Bodalski, for sharing your time and talent with our community and in the end, helping those that need it most!
