What is Godly Play?
Come Find Out!

Children have an innate sense of the presence of God. Godly Play helps them explore their faith through story, to enhance their spiritual experience through wonder and play.

The Rev. Canon Joshua Varner, who is our guest preacher and celebrant on Sunday, February 2, will offer a brief introduction to Godly Play following worship. A nursery will be provided as will lunch. Joshua is the Canon for Youth and Children for our diocese.

If you were with us for our Stewardship dinner last fall, you would have seen how captivating Godly Play can be. Parents and those interested in learning more about Godly Play are invited to attend.

Questions? Contact Children's Director Ayn Colsh at [email protected]

Please Note:

The Dig Deeper Bible Study will NOT meet tomorrow,

PARISH NEWS

Recovery update from The Rev. Dr. Cynthia Taylor:

I saw this post from my friend Bevan Weyburn this morning. This speaks to where I am in my recovery. Two weeks ago today I had surgery for a total knee replacement. I had never had surgery before, so I thought I'd start with something simple!

There have been good days and bad days and progress is literally measured in baby steps. I'm grateful to the people, staff and leadership of Holy Comforter for stepping in for me (pun int ended).

I am also deeply, deeply touched by the care, love and prayers that are surrounding me on this journey. The prayers have been tanglible....really. There aren't enough words of thanksgiving to Robert and Cheryl Spessert who turned their home upside down so I could spend my first week of recovery there receiving TLC.

Everyday I receive cards and notes of love and encouragement and there is always good food to sustain me. I write this with tears of thanksgiving. I have learned so much about the love of Jesus from each of you. Thank you.
I will continue to be out on medical leave for another three weeks. Healing takes time.

Pat Conroy's book Beach Music kept me company for the first ten days (Thank you Doug and Cindy Taylor.) It's one of the few of his books I hadn't read. And I've been thinking of you, Carla Damron, as I've read Conroy and recall his impact on your life.

I'm catching up on all the many back episodes of This is Us that I recorded but haven't watched. I'm reading a terrific new biography of C. S. Lewis and, on the light side, I watch old episodes of Mystery Science Theatre. And, of course, my corgis Kelsey and Reepicheep, are always at my side. Puppy love=healing.

Now, re-read this meme please. How wiill you partner with God in your own healing? I'm reminded of the saying that if you don't take time for your wellness, you'll have to take time for your illness. What will you be doing to be proactive today? For me, it's off to PT!

Thank you all.

Children's Ministry

Sunday, January 26: The K-2 children will visit the Creative Drama station to learn that God understands our prayers and play a game of charades using the Lord's Prayer. The 3-5 kids will visit the Media &Technology station with a focus on how the Lord's Prayer brings us closer to God and learn the Lord's Prayer in American Sign Language.

Sunday, February 2: The K-2 Class will visit the Bible Skills station and learn that God helps when things are not easy by playing a hard game, discussing hard times and competing as teams to reach a goal. The 3-5 group will visit the STEM station and will learn that building our lives around Jesus is much like building a house on a foundation of rock. The children will use Lego structures to illustrate the principles of the House on the Rock parable.

Sunday, February 2nd:  This is a national, one day focus on hunger.  Youth across the nation raise money for Food Banks.  Put $1 in the soup pot and bring non-perishable food.

Coming to The Rector's Forum

Next in the Rector's Forum:  starting February 9, we will read and discuss each week a chapter from Rodney Stark's The Rise of Christianity:  How the Obscure, Marginal Jesus Movement Became the Dominant Religious Force in the Western World in a Few Centuries, first HarperCollins paperback edition published in 1997, 272 pages.

Using historical evidence and applying his expertise in social science, Professor Stark, doctorate in sociology from the University of California Berkeley, traces the causes of the growth of Christianity from a mere few thousand at Pentecost to being a majority of the population of the Roman Empire by the time of Constantine.  His work refutes the conventional wisdom that Christianity started as a clandestine movement amongst the poor.  Within this book he:  distinguishes Christianity from Rome's other religions, reveals the social science involved with conversion, provides evidence of the social and economic class of converts, summarizes the mission to the Jews, notes the impact of epidemics and Christians' response, describes the benefits available to Christian women plus their impact in conversion, portrays urban chaos and the Church's actions, and a reflects on virtue.  Robert Spessert will lead the discussions.  The book is available at Amazon, new for $13.99 Prime, with options to purchase used.  ISBN-10: 0060677015; and ISBN-13: 978-0060677015.
