Bolger Blog: Three Sustainable Practices For Large Format Print
|
|
Today, more and more companies are looking to become more environmentally sustainable with their business practices. A common misconception is that printing is taxing on the environment (especially large format), but the realization is that with more technological advancements, large format printing can be green!
SGP certified Bolger reviews the 3 most common sustainability practices within the large format market.
1. GREEN INKS
The most common traditional inks use solvents or eco-solvents (the latter being less environmentally friendly(, which mean they exude a cocktail of chemical emissions when they’re used. This is not good for our planet.
The good news is there are alternatives that printing companies can use like. UV-curing or water-based inks, which are far less harmful in terms of emissions. We are seeing these more commonly used within the printing industry.
There are also inks that are designed specifically to break down easily during recycling (which is particularly relevant for printing on paper and board). What’s notably helpful for print suppliers is how widely accessible these have become for use in some of the most popular print equipment.

As Walmart drops plastic shopping bags, advocates push for broader retail waste reduction
Dr. Calvin Lakhan, the co-investigator of the Waste Wiki project at York University — an initiative that promotes waste management research, called Walmart Canada’s policy “well-intentioned.”
“The proliferation of plastic packaging is symptomatic of broken food systems and broken consumption systems,” Lakhan said.
“We can’t paint all plastic packaging with the same brush. I think we need to have a much more nuanced discussion and identify where does plastic make sense, where doesn’t it make sense and where is the opportunity to switch to a much more sustainable alternative in the near term.”
He said Canada “is not on the right path” and that governments need to step back and look at the total economic and environmental factors along with environmental science to better achieve sustainability versus just boosting recycling efforts.

3M invests in the future of manufacturing
|
3M is investing $165 million to improve water quality and reduce water use at its manufacturing facility in Cottage Grove, Minnesota. The investment follows an August 2021 announcement of a companywide collaborative effort to partner with Clean Harbors for waste management, which eliminated the need for 3M’s incinerator to process waste in Cottage Grove.
The company has fully transitioned its waste management at the site, and as a result of discontinuing incinerator operations, reduced its on-site energy use by 25 percent.
The technology investment in Cottage Grove is another step forward in the company’s $1 billion, 20-year commitment to ambitious environmental goals, which include reduced water use and reduced plastic use – as well as achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
