Helping Someone Who Refuses It
by Shelly Slaczka

When your loved one needs help you will naturally want to help them, but they are not always willing to accept it. Before pushing your loved one to accept help, try to understand their fears. Help offered should be presented as comforting and supportive. Keep your loved one's right to make their own decision in mind and weigh your responsibility with a family member or friend. Here are some things to consider when reaching out to help:
  • Remember change is difficult.
  • Introduce change slowly. Admitting you need help is an admission that you are losing your abilities. Add new ideas in slowly.
  • Ask open-ended questions and give your loved one time to answer.
  • If help is refused, wait about 15 minutes and try asking again.
  • Assure your loved one that they are still in control of decisions made about care.
  • Offer a trial period.
    • Offer options of the type of care needed.
  • Make lists and prioritize problems.
  • If in-home, suggest someone to help with keeping the house clean or to do the heavy work.
If your loved one continues to refuse help and is at serious risk, as a last resort, seek legal advice regarding a guardianship. Remember to always appeal to your loved one's wants and needs. It is your loved one who will have to live with most of the outcomes.
