February 2015
Dear Daniels Customer

If it's February, love must be in the air. Right?

Well, it is here at This Just In...

This month we will elevate our game. Bring the romance. The joi de verve. The passion for what drives us all...love.

That feeling you have when you know she or he's the right one. How your heart skips a beat when you first lay eyes on her. Or him. The way your palms begin to perspire and you get a lump in your throat. It's unmistakable. It's love.

It's that very same feeling when the Daniel's Oil or Propane truck pulls up with fresh warmth on the coldest of days. Am I right?

Well, we hope so.

So, enjoy this, the shortest month of the year, with the one you love. And, as Crosby Stills Nash and Young once suggested, "if you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with."

Rest Easy

When the Blizzard of the Century hit last week Daniels was inundated with calls from worried customers. The single biggest concern, naturally, was, "

will I run out of fuel?" For more than 75 years we've worked very hard to develop a monitoring system that predicts fuel oil usage.

We very rarely have customers who actually run out of fuel. If they do, generally their consumption use has dramatically increased in a short period of time. Could be new family members (generally a new baby in the house) or someone is now at home more often - retirement, between jobs and so forth.

We thought we'd like to help you figure out how many days your fuel will last, especially since we are likely to get more snow in the future. This is a generalization - but it will hopefully provide you with a sense of security regarding how long your fuel oil will last.

For this example we'll use a 1500 square foot house using a standard 275-gallon oil tank -- with a quarter of a tank left -- approximately 68 gallons.

With an average winter day use of 6 gallons per day - you will easily have a 10-day supply.

With half a tank - you have nearly 3-weeks in reserve!

Obviously there are many criteria that can effect this - but you need to know that Daniels fuel management system is designed - first and foremost - to make sure that you have all the fuel oil and propane you need to keep you warm throughout the winter. So, hopefully, you can rest easy.

10 Things To Know About Valentine's Day

1. In Slovenia, Saint Valentine or Zdravko was one of the saints of spring, the saint of good health and the patron of beekeepers and pilgrims.

2. J.C. Cooper, in The Dictionary of Christianity, writes that Saint Valentine was "a priest of Rome who was imprisoned for succouring persecuted Christians.

3. The earliest description of February 14 as an annual celebration of love appears in the Charter of the Court of Love. The charter, allegedly issued by Charles VI of France in 1400, describes lavish festivities including a feast, amorous song and poetry competitions, jousting and dancing.

4. The earliest surviving valentines in English appear to be those in the Paston Letters, written in 1477 by Margery Brewes to her future husband John Paston "my right well-beloved Valentine."

5. The verse Roses are red echoes conventions traceable as far back as Edmund Spenser's epicThe Faerie Queene (1590):

She bath'd with roses red, and violets blew,

And all the sweetest flowres, that in the forrest grew.

6. In China, the common situation is the man gives choclate, flowers or both to the woman that he loves. In Chinese, Valentine's Day is called, "lover's festival."

7. In India, in antiquity, there was a tradition of adoring Kamadeva, the lord of love;exemplified by the carvings in the Khajuraho Group of Monuments and the writing of the Kamasutra treaty lovemaking.

8. In Japan, Morozoff Ltd, introduced the holiday for the first time in 1936, when it ran an advertisement aimed at foreigners. Later in 1953 it began promoting the giving of heart shaped choclates; other Japanese confectionary companies followed suit thereafter. The custom that only women give chocolates to men originated from the translation error of a chocolate-company executive during the initial campaigns. In particular, office ladies give chocolate to their co-workers.

9. In the United State, about 190 million Valentine's Day cards are sent each year. And that figure does not include the hundreds of millions of cards school children exchange. Additionally, in the United States alone, the average valentine's spending has increased every year, from $108 a person in 2010 to $131 in 2013. What?!!!

10. In Saudi Arabia, in 2002 and 2008, religious police banned the sale of all Valentine's Day items, telling shop workers to remove any red items, because the day is considered a Christian holiday.

Cold Enough For You?

We just received this from The Red Cross (who, by the by, are always looking for blood donors.) Just sayin'.

Frigid temperatures are here and we have some suggestions for people to take precautions against the cold.

Safety Tips for Frigid Weather

Protect Yourself from Freezing Temperatures

Avoid unnecessary exposure to the cold. Be aware of both the temperature and the wind chill when planning outdoor activities. When you prepare to go outside in severe cold weather, please remember the following:

  •  Most of your body heat is lost through your head so wear a hat, preferably one that covers your ears.
  • Dressing in layers helps you retain heat. You can remove layers as needed if you become too warm.
  • Mittens provide more warmth to your hands than gloves.
  • Wear waterproof, insulated boots to help avoid hypothermia or frostbite by keeping your feet warm and dry and to maintain your footing in ice and snow.
  • Get out of wet clothes immediately and warm core body temperature with a blanket or warm fluids like hot cider or soup. Avoid drinking caffeine or alcohol if you expect you or someone you are trying to help has hypothermia or frostbite.
  • Recognize the symptoms of hypothermia that can be a serious medical condition: confusion, dizziness, exhaustion and severe shivering. Seek medical attention immediately if you have these symptoms.

Heat Your Home Safely

As families turn to alternative heating sources to supplement their home heating systems they should take the following precautions:

  • Use caution with portable space heaters - Heating equipment is the leading cause of home fires during the winter months, according to the National Fire Prevention Association.
  • To prevent fire, place space heaters at least three feet away from anything combustible, including wallpaper, bedding, clothing, pets and people.
  • Never leave space heaters operating when you are not in the room or when you go to bed.
  • Don't leave children or pets unattended near space heaters.
  • Drying wet mittens, or clothing over space heaters in a fire hazard.
  • Make sure smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms are working properly and replace batteries as necessary. REMEMBER: smoke alarms have a finite and should be replaced after 10 years. Many newer models have long life batteries that do not need replacing during their 10 year lifespan.
  • Don't overload your electrical outlets when plugging in space heaters. Be careful or extension cords that present hazardous walkways.
  • Have your chimney connections and flues inspected by a professional and cleaned if necessary prior to the start of every heating season.
  • Use a sturdy fireplace screen when burning fires. Burn only wood - never burn paper or pine boughs
  • Create a disaster supplies kit - Get together lifesaving items in both your home and vehicle. Visit this website for easy access -www.redcross.org/prepare for more information on disaster preparedness.

       Prevent Frozen Pipes

Many homeowners may not be ready for frigid weather either. Now is the time to protect your house pipes from freezing and bursting. With the cold weather upon us, preventive action may make all the difference.

  • Keep garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage or in the walls adjacent to the garage.
  • Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing. Be sure to move any harmful cleaners and household chemicals out of the reach of children.
  • When the temperature is very low outside, let the cold water drip from faucets served by the exposed pipes or pipes in exterior walls. Running water through the pipe - even a trickle - helps prevent pipes from freezing because the temperature of the water running through it is above freezing.
  • Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature during the day and at night. By temporarily suspending the use of lower nighttime temperatures, you may incur a higher heating bill, but you can prevent a much more costly repair job.
  • If pipes freeze and burst. If you will be going away during cold weather, leave the heat on in your home, set to a temperature no lower than 55F.

Oh and by the way - they're looking for a few good men. And women. To donate!

Art Of The Month

Winter Morning by Piotr Olech

On this minuscule panel, measuring just 22x19.5cm, Gabril Metsu painted with minute detail this everyday scene of an old man with his Gouda pipe and his pewter jar leaning on against a beer barrel. The old drinker looks rather the worse for wear; he sags rather than sits on the chair as he peers through his watery eyes, his chin unshaven, his collar open and his cap askew.

Metsu presents the man with a direct honesty and realism that is not in fact harsh; the smile and the friendly eyes of the old drinker lend a certain sympathetic quality. Metsu shows the details of the drinkers surroundings with great finesse: the pewter jug, the felt buttoned coat, the fur trimming of the cap and the German stoneware pitcher.

Beside the pitcher is a slate on which the number of beers is chalked up. The sign of a red deer is painted on the keg, a rather vague detail against a brown background. This was the trademark of the Amsterdam brewery 'Roo Hart' (Red Deer). The deer is a subtle aside in which the painter has quietly advertised his neighbor's business.

Love is a canvas furnished by Nature and embroidered by imagination.
