Newest Community to Partner with Habitat for Humanity
Volunteers from the Philadelphia community in Rockingham completed a porch repair outside of their own neighborhood on Mizpah Road on February 26th. The volunteers are excited about the revitalization work planned in their own community to help elderly and disabled neighbors remain in their homes safely and affordably with critical repairs such as roof replacements, window replacements, porch repairs and ramps.

These external repairs are funded through Habitat’s Neighborhood Revitalization program which relies on local volunteers to help carry out some of the needed repairs while others are completed by subcontractors. Members of the Philadelphia community will meet March 12th to submit repair applications for the upcoming year. |

Habitat Receives Great Report from
Urgent Repair Program Visit
Our Repair Program in Richmond County is very active with twelve repairs having been completed in 2021 and six more in progress. As part of this effort in 2022, Freedom Baptist will bring out a repair team every fourth Saturday. This effort is being led by Earnest Strickland. Delta Sigma Theta sorority has arranged to bring out a repair team on April 30. Habitat thanks both of these teams.
One of the ways Habitat funds its repair work is through the North Carolina Housing Association’s Urgent Repair Program. After wrapping up the first full year of working with this grant, they came to inspect the work done by Habitat and were very pleased with the results. “You are very fortunate to have a leader like Jim doing this work – he is very smart, knows his stuff, and has a heart for what we are doing.” Those were the words expressed to us about our Aging In Place Coordinator, Jim Parsons. We couldn’t agree more – and Jim is hard at work most days coordinating and leading volunteers on as many repair requests as we can handle. Our goal is to continue increasing this important part of our mission to help preserve the affordable housing of our elderly and disabled neighbors.

Apostles Build Begins

Last week, pastors from local churches came together to build beside a Habitat Homeowner, Shanetta Strong. Together, they provided the labor and prayer support to raise the walls which will soon become an energy-efficient home that Shanetta will purchase with a guaranteed affordable mortgage. The idea of going out into the community to serve others, in the way that Jesus’ apostles served, attracted individuals in many churches.

February Habitat Faith Relations Meeting
Hosted by Mount Zion United Church of Christ
at Dobbins Heights Community Center
Over 25 individuals representing 15 churches joined together for lunch and learning with Faith Relations Lunch in February at the Dobbins Heights Community Center.
Following our meal, Pastor Dian Griffin Jackson Davis delivered a spirited message supporting the faith community’s involvement with Habitat. Thank you, Pastor Dian. Our Director Amie Fraley then gave a review of on-going Habitat initiatives in Richmond County.
After an inspiring message of faith, the group enjoyed fellowship and updates on all things Habitat in Richmond County. To receive an email about upcoming faith relations lunches, email afraley@sandhillshabitat.org.
Lastly, Dan Joslin, the Faith Relations Ambassador, announced the remaining Richmond County meetings for 2022: May 18 at Freedom Baptist, August 17 at First Baptist of Hamlet, and October 19 at Rockingham First United Methodist.

February Faith Moments: Why Habitat?
Tina Turner lamented, “What’s love got to do with it?” The lyrics that follow tell us that love is just a secondhand emotion—a sad commentary on the pop culture of her era and even more so now. And it certainly was a sad insight into her abusive relationship with Ike. At Habitat Faith Builds you may ask, “What’s faith, and yes love, got to do with it?” Well, pretty much everything. On our Faith/Apostles Builds we manifest our faith in Him and extend His love of us to those for whom we build. These are not secondhand emotions. Indeed, they are primary.
Tina later asks, “What’s love but a sweet old-fashioned notion?” While our version of love at Habitat may be old-fashioned, as in going back at least three millennia, it is not passé. 1 John 3:18 tells us to love with truthful words and actions. And in Isaiah 58:10 we are told to help those in trouble, then our light will shine out from the darkness. To paraphrase, these verses tell us to demonstrate our love of each other. The work of the faith community on behalf of Habitat’s mission, responds to this call.
Being present on a Faith Build work site reinforces our bonds as a community. It also strengthens our sense of responding to God’s exhortation in 1 Peter 4:10 to “use whatever gift you have received to serve others.” And it is fun to work with others of any faith and those with no professed faith. Come join us. So, is this an invitation or an exhortation? Hear it is as you like, but do hear it.
Now, to close the loop. “What’s love got to do with it?” Is it really just a secondhand emotion? Or is it an old-fashioned notion? Or is it a core value we are encouraged to fulfill? For one, two or even three mornings we arise a little early, gather up our work tools or just our attitude and drive to a work site. Once there, we encounter others responding to the call. They are typically in good spirits as they connect and share brief stories. We get introduced to each other, we pray and then we get on with doing the Lord’s work. Again, “What’s love got to do with it?” Well, pretty much everything.

Mrs. Whitcomb was born in Long Beach, California, and has lived all over the country. Her father and husband were both in the Navy. She has traveled from East to West, Hawaii, Cuba, and Japan.
Dorothy worked as a healthcare professional at different agencies, hospitals, insurance companies as RN/SW/CCM, Social Worker, Certified Case Management. Her warm and compassionate personality makes her the perfect greeter for the ReStore.

When she felt she needed to get out of the house more, she called Habitat about volunteering. She told us the reception she received made all the difference; she started last year. Her favorite part of Habitat is the staff, volunteers, and customers and how everyone is respected. |
