Whether you're excited for a home-cooked meal or a few days without classes, we hope you'll to take a moment to reflect on all that you're appreciative of this month.  If you're going home or celebrating outside of New Orleans, we wish you safe travels. If you're staying in town, consider making a new tradition with friends and see what the city and campus has to offer during the holidays. Regardless of where you'll be, our hope is that you enjoy the break and practice self-care before coming back to campus to finish out the semester.

Tips from the PAs: Finals Season Edition!

Hey, y'all! Your NSLP PAs, Anfernee and Drew, are back with some tips for acing exams, practicing self-care, and staying positive. Finals season is fast approaching, and some of you may be feeling the pressure already. Don't worry! We've got you covered with some studying tips that'll keep you playing at the top of your game. (Trust us: together, we've been through 16 Tulane finals seasons!)
  • Make a schedule, and remember it! Check the syllabus of every class you're in for the dates of every final exam, paper, and presentation, and write them down. If you know you have a big project coming up, sketch out a rough research timeline. Schedule extra time to study for a cumulative final. Make appointments at the Tutoring Center. Even if you're not a schedule-ly person (and that's okay!) at least know when all the important stuff is happening. It may seem self-explanatory, but we've both seen people show up to exams late (or not at all).

  • Know how you work best! It might be grueling to study by yourself for hours on end, but if you know you won't be able to focus in a group setting, it's all worth it. Conversely, if you need the energy of others to keep you going, find a study buddy, go to review sessions, or sit at a communal table in Howie-T. Set yourself up for success.

  • Take a break (no, really!) Finals burnout is real, and we've definitely experienced it. The pressure to meet every deadline, match other people's perceived strategies, and achieve your own goals can be destructive, so take some time for yourself. We're sure you've heard this before, but the old standby tips are still important. Take a quick break to stretch, say hi to a friend, or call home. Drink plenty of water, eat some nutritious food, and exercise or meditate to reduce stress. And please, get some sleep! Coffee is not a substitute for healthful rest!

  • Invest in the process! If you find yourself freaking out over deadlines and pressure to achieve, take a step back, breathe, and remind yourself to invest in the process. Focus on the quality of work you're doing to prepare, instead of fixating on that A, because preparation is the only thing you can control. Chances are, if you invest in the process, good results will follow!
