International Education Week 2020
|
|
A joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and Department of Education, International Education Week celebrates the importance of international education and exchange across the globe. This year, IEW took place November 16th - 20th, and the Bunche Center partnered with a number of organizations for virtual events, including the International Student House-Washington, D.C., Center for Strategic & International Studies (CSIS), University of Minnesota, Morgan State University, and Prairie View A & M University.
We also celebrated IEW via our social media channels. International education is in supporting the Howard Forward Strategic Plan pillars, particularly:
- Enhance Academic Excellence
- Inspire New Knowledge
- Serve The Community

Student Spotlight:
Contextualizing the Sustainable Development Goals

The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, are highly integrated, collaborative plans to transform the world we live in today, into the world we want to live in tomorrow. These 17 goals outline a “plan of action for people, planet and prosperity,” ranging from quality education to climate change to poverty and economic growth, and more. The UN challenged our nations to work actively to achieve these goals and targets by 2030. This challenge comes with an emphasis on peace and partnership as well, because without these, the SDGs may never come to fruition.
As a Howard University student, I believe the Sustainable Development Goals are foundational to any effort to change the status quo. Whether we choose to acknowledge them explicitly or not, the SDGs articulate our collective aim to address the world’s most pressing problems through strategic and tangible means, to which we all can contribute. Every part of this plan highlights an area area of significant international importance. The goals start with a call to end poverty and hunger, then move on to a push for healthy lifestyles, educational attainment, and equality across genders and backgrounds. A focus on clean water and energy are followed by the need for fair labor, and ample industry and infrastructure. The UN aims to reduce inequalities by creating sustainable communities which practice responsible consumption and production. The goals then move on to addressing our environmental crises, both in water and on land. To conclude the SDGs, UN members realized that harmony, justice and collaboration are necessary to both achieve these goals and to maintain them once they are reached.
Through the #BuncheTalks series, I've become more familiar with the SDGs. After researching and learning more about them, it became clear how important these goals are for students, specifically. For students of Howard and elsewhere, they have the potential to frame the world and workforce we’ll enter in the next few years. On economic, social, and environmental levels, this generation’s leaders and I will be tasked with moving the world forward. We’ll have to step up to make these goals a reality by using them as groundwork for rebuilding our organizations and institutions.
The Sustainable Development Goals are particularly relevant to my studies and the work I want to do after Howard. Being a Community Development major, I’ve studied the economic, sociological and political injustices many groups across this country face, how it came to be this way, and possible solutions to change it. The SDGs provide a valuable example of an interconnected, international, and multi-faceted approach to making the world a better place–which I believe is the only way to advance. As a future educator and nonprofit director, the SDGs give me an increased understanding of what is needed and what I can do. Every student can advance this mission by recognizing and confronting their own biases, which will better prepare them for life and work.
Most of us have been working hard and long through likely one of the most difficult years we’ll ever encounter. This year has been filled with loss, confusion, and isolation that has left many of us feeling unmotivated and hopeless. Despite this year’s challenges, however, many of us have decided that we aren’t going to settle for the world we live in anymore. People from all stages of life, from all backgrounds made the decision to fight for the world we all deserve and the Sustainable Development Goals are just the place to start.

Public Affairs Fellowship Closing Ceremony

The 2019-2020 PRH Fellows Hadiyah Cummings, Jessica Grider, Dyrrell Moon, Virgil Parker, and Lyndsie Whitehead closed out a successful fellowship year complete with mentorship, monthly professional development workshops, a summer internship, and a stipend. As the first cohort of PRH Fellows in more than a decade, we are incredibly proud of this cohort’s accomplishments and look forward to their future success as global leaders! We thank President Wayne Frederick, Provost Anthony Wutoh, the Steering Committee Members, Internship Supervisors, Mentors, and the friends and family who joined us to celebrate the Fellows on this special occasion.
