West Milwaukee Intermediate School Art Students Express Themselves
According to Dan Walker, Art teacher at West Milwaukee Intermediate School, virtual learning can inspire students to be as creative as ever. “The students and I recognized distance learning as a unique time for artists: we were all working in our separate makeshift studios, we all had access to different materials, and we all had different inspirations that drove our ideas. We knew if we worked hard, we could put our creative stamp on this very unique time,” said Walker. “Planning an Art Show is not our typical “start of the year activity” but it’s something my students wanted to do.” Read more...

Gaggle Keeps a Watchful Eye on District-Issued Technology
In September, our District announced it had partnered with Gaggle to monitor the use of district-issued technology. Gaggle constantly scans accounts for harmful content.
“We are using Gaggle proactively to protect students and ensure that they are using these tools safely and correctly,” explained Director of Leadership and Learning, Deidre Roemer. “Since we’ve started using Gaggle, we’ve had to respond to issues with use of social media, emails and posts. We have a rapid response protocol in place for any threats of violence to self or school.” Read more...

Sodexo Meal Program Makes a Difference for Families
Throughout the pandemic, there has been great concern about the meals provided to children at our schools. “We know that many families rely on our meal programs,” said Sodexo Manager Steve Kosnar.
According to Kosnar, “Since we started on March 17, 2020, we’ve distributed over 170,000 meals. We have an extensive fall distribution plan in place now and we’re working to be responsive to the needs of our families. Since we’ve added early and late hours at James E. Dottke High School, we’ve been distributing 1,000 meals at that location per day!” Read more...

- October 14, 2020: 2:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m., West Allis Farmers Market, 6501 W. National Avenue.
- October 17, 2020: 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., Nathan Hale High School, 11601 W. Lincoln Avenue.
- October 19, 2020: 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., West Allis Farmers Market, 6501 W. National Avenue.

Moody's Upgrades District’s Rating From Baa2 to Baa1 - Says Outlook is Positive
On September 16, 2020, Moody's Investors Service upgraded our District’s credit rating from Baa2 to Baa1 on the general obligation unlimited tax (GOULT) bonds of the District. Concurrently, Moody’s identifies the District’s outlook as positive.
According to Moody’s, the upgrade to Baa1 reflects the district's improved financial operations and utilization of one-time revenue windfalls to boost operating reserves and liquidity and to retire a large bullet maturity of general obligation debt. The rating also considers the district’s large suburban tax base with slightly below average resident income indices and low unfunded pension liabilities and debt, the latter of which may increase given outstanding capital needs. The positive outlook reflects the likelihood that the district’s rating will move up if its strengthened financial position is maintained. Read more...

Franklin Elementary School's Mrs. Gutzwiller Wins the Juicy Juice 100% Thankful Contest
With some help from District staff members, friends, and family, Sarah Gutzwiller has won the "Juicy Juice” 100% Thankful Contest. The contest was based on nominations from parents about teachers that went above and beyond in the classroom.
Mrs. Gutzwiller teaches third/fourth graders and was nominated to Juicy Juice by a parent, Elizabeth Ware, for her extraordinary work at Franklin Elementary School. Mrs. Ware’s son, Jayden, has been in her class for two years. According to Ware, "Sarah is amazing. My son loves learning and going to school each day. Sarah goes above and beyond for her students. We are thrilled that Jayden is part of Sarah's class at Franklin Elementary School." Read more...

James E. Dottke High School Student Schedules Designed to Support Project-Based Learning
When James E. Dottke High School transformed to a project-based learning school, staff knew to provide students with an equally high quality and rigorous educational experience, they had to be very intentional about how they structured the school day.
“We needed a system for delivering content and time for students to complete projects,” explained Principal, Greg Goelz. “Over the summer, we held virtual meetings multiple times a week to develop what we feel is a truly unique and highly individualized high school experience for students that attend our school.” Read more...

Pandemic Perseverance Helps Fourth Annual 30 Days of Summer Yoga Thrive
This summer, the West Allis-West Milwaukee School District's Department of Recreation and Community Services put their resilience, perseverance, and service mindset to the test determined to find a way to hold their Fourth Annual Thirty Days of Summer Yoga program during a national pandemic.
“Fundraising, physical fitness and mental health have all been equally impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s put a sense of urgency on park and recreation professionals who continue to find creative ways to provide programs.” said Director of Recreation and Community Services, Shelly Strasser. “We’re working hard to keep our communities safe while providing programs that support health and quality of life.” Read more...

Virtually Something for Everyone!
This fall, the WAWM RCS has added a variety of virtual classes to help increase health and well-being during the historic pandemic.
“We offer private music lessons, art classes, photography, and more,” said Director of Recreation and Community Services, Shelly Strasser. “We are striving to provide quality recreational experiences for our community while we’re apart. It’s just another way we can stay connected with each other.”
“One of our most popular virtual classes is Private Music Lessons with Bob Halat. He is providing online music instruction and it’s our most popular virtual class offering!” says Program Manager, Amanda Schwichtenberg. “Technology has helped us rethink the ways we can come together. Our Virtual classes have been rewarding for participants and exciting for us. We’re opening up new doors to participation,” added Schwichtenberg.

Hale Grad Rick Wagner Plays for Green Bay Packers
On Sunday, September 20, 2020, Rick Wagner, Nathan Hale High School graduate Class of 2008, stepped on the hallowed ground of Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The 30-year-old Wagner is now an offensive tackle for the Green Bay Packers.
According to Scott Pritzl, Physical Education teacher and Coach at Nathan Hale High School, Rick Wagner was always a stand-out athlete. “I started working with Rick when he made the varsity basketball team as a freshman. He had height and ability. Of course, Rick was also on our football teams. In class, he was a typical student. On the court or field, he was an incredible athlete.” Read more...

Enrollment Center
As we work to practice safe social distancing, please adhere to the following guidelines:
- No more than 2 persons per family in the building
- Wear protective personal equipment (i.e, face masks), if possible

Bring required enrollment information (see resident enrollment)
All enrollment center specialists will be wearing protective personal equipment (PPE) which includes facial masks. Additionally, we will be sanitizing enrollment stations after each use. We would ask that if possible when you physically attend the enrollment center that you take any possible precaution to promote the safety of all parties. This would include wearing any protective personal equipment that you have as well as coming prepared with all required enrollment information, please see our resident enrollment page for additional information.

Skyward Student Information System
Skyward is the tool that helps parents view student schedules, attendance, and grade reports while logged in on any personal device! We ask that parents access Skyward to track their child’s progress in school (we only print paper records upon request).
It also allows for increased communication with teachers. It is very important that parents maintain accurate telephone numbers and email addresses on Skyward.
