November 25, 2020 • Volume 17 No. 22
Tomorrow’s Thanksgiving will be a day so very familiar and, for many of us, so very different. Here are four ways that underscore how Thanksgiving this year will be different:
  1. Traditionally, college students return home. This year, many students have already been home due to online learning all semester or Covid-19 complications.
  2. Traditionally, extended families join together, and large tables are set for a Thanksgiving feast. This year, families will be dining outdoors, or sharing meals on zoom, or staying in unique dining pods.
  3. Traditionally, 20-25 lb. turkeys fly off the shelf. This year, 10 lb. turkeys are popular, and duck, lamb, and chicken are alternative dining options.
  4. Traditionally, Black Friday speaks to the early risers. This year, most of our Chanukah shopping will happen online.
For many, Thanksgiving is the consummate American holiday—uniting Americans across the spectrum. Shabbat is the sacred day each week when we recall the wonder of creation and celebrate God’s image in all of creation. As Americans, even as we observe Thanksgiving, let us also be mindful, that the settling of America was not so smooth and for the Native American population, our country’s birth caused pain and death. Acknowledging this fact should not diminish our celebration; however, it should inspire us to embrace all of America’s diversity. Our country’s strength rests in our acknowledging our country’s past errors and pledging to build an America that reflects the contributions and struggles of all who dwell in our land.

Happy Thanksgiving and an early Shabbat Shalom!
Rabbi Deborah A. Hirsch

Interfaith Community Thanksgiving Virtual Service!
TOMORROW Thursday, November 26, 2020, 9:00 - 10:00 am

This year, Hon. George Latimer, Westchester County Executive, will be the guest speaker. Cantor Schloss will open the service with Hinei Ma Tov. You will also have a chance to donate.

The Giving Tree

Each year, the Temple Israel community supports local organizations through our Giving Tree Holiday Drive. This year will be no different, but how we fulfill wishes will be.

We are hopeful that the decision to move forward will not only support those in great need but provide our community with a sense of normalcy during the holiday season.

That's why this year, in lieu of gifts, we are asking for gift cards, direct donations, or donations to the Temple Israel Giving Tree, to allow us to purchase gift cards.
