Opening Keynote Speaker Danielle Feinberg
|
|
Danielle Feinberg is a Visual Effects Supervisor at Pixar Animation Studios. Feinberg began her career at Pixar in 1997, after receiving her BA in computer science from Harvard University. Her first position was on the movie A Bug's Life as a render wrangler, an entry level, problem-solving position, and she soon was leading the otherwise all-male department. Feinberg got her first taste of lighting during this time and fell in love with creating the final image for film. She went on to light many of Pixar's films, including Toy Story 2, Monsters, Inc., the Oscar-winning Finding Nemo and The Incredibles. Another Oscar winner, Wall-E, was Feinberg's first movie directing the lighting in her role as Director of Photography. It was heaven for someone whose greatest inspiration is using technology to make art. She went on to oversee the lighting on two more Oscar-winning films, Brave (featuring Pixar's first film with a girl as the main character) and Coco, celebrating the Mexican holiday Dia de los Muertos. Feinberg recently completed the film Turning Red, taking on the role of Visual Effects Supervisor. She was the first woman in 20 years to hold this position at Pixar, using both her technical chops and her aesthetic skills, to help push the film to new places.
Feinberg has given talks about the challenges of making Pixar's film in various cities across Europe, Asia, Central America, and the United States. She also gives talks to girls of all ages, encouraging them to pursue code, math and science by showing them the magic found in combining art and technology to create movies. In 2016, she was able to bring that message to a broader audience with her TED talk that was part of the PBS "Science and Wonder" presentation for TED Talks Live. It was named one of the top TED talks of 2016.

Jamie
I have had some great jobs in the past. I was a babysitter with over 30 clients in high school, a camp counselor, I drove an 88 passenger school bus, I was a day care director, a professional student for a time, and a nanny to two girls, 5 cats, 3 dogs, and 2 birds; but then found more kids on the street to take care of. Later on I was a teacher, then tech coach, and now tech team leader. I love school, I love learning, and I love teaching - but lately, I'm really into thinking about teaching and learning from a brain science perspective. I want to understand more about how learning happens to help redefine educational experiences and make them accessible and meaningful.

Jamal
I was born at Long Beach memorial, raised in Compton until the age of 12, then moved to the Inland Empire in Moreno Valley. Upon graduating from high school I chose to go to school back east at Villanova University in PA. I loved the culture, but missed the weather so returned back to California with my B.S. in Computer Engineering. I began my career as a User Support Tech, and worked my way up to a Network Administrator for the County of Riverside. After getting married I decided to work closer to home, and started my career in education as a Senior Network Engineer with Lynwood USD. After 3 years I became the Director of Technology. Now - after life changes and moves - I am currently at Colton Joint USD with the title of Chief Technology Officer.

Featured Member: Lisa DeLapo
|
|
Lisa is the Director of Information and Instructional Technology at Union School District. She was kind enough to tell us a little about herself, her background, and her experience as a CITE member.
|
How long have you been in your current role and how did you get there?
"I have been at Union School District since June 2019. Prior to that, I worked for Foothill College at the Krause Center for Innovation (KCI) as the Innovator in Residence. Prior to that, I was at Lafayette School District as the Director of Innovation, Design, and Technology. I have a multiple subject credential and a clear administrative credential, but I also have a graduate certification in Network & Communication Management. I have always been kind of geeky with computers - since my first device was a TRS-80 when I was seven years old. I even met my husband online back in 1997, when I was still using a dial-up modem through AOL."

|
How long have you been a CITE member? What is your favorite memory from a CITE event?
"I think I have been a CITE member for about seven years. I went to my first CITE conference in 2016. In 2015, I had a JET review (a joint ed-tech review with CUE and CITE) at Lafayette School District. It was eye-opening to learn so much from this process, and within a few months of the report, I had the confidence to implement changes to the network and server infrastructure. The 2021 conference in Sacramento was also full of surprises, fun, and learning. First, being able to be back in person with everyone was exactly what my tired mind and soul needed. Finally completing the CCTO Mentor Program (Cohort 15!!) and finding out on stage that I won the Outstanding Student Award still brings a smile to my face."
What do you do in your (limited) free time?
"In my free time, I volunteer as the Vice-President of the CUE Board of Directors, and I participate in CITE's membership & Awards Committees and the leadership of the Silicon Valley Regional Group. When I can, I love watching Star Trek with my husband. I have two adult sons who also keep us busy, one is at the University of Connecticut, getting his PhD in Mathematics, and the other is at San Jose State getting his BA in Psychology."
Are there any special shoutouts you'd like to give to someone in your life or the CITE Community who has made a special impact on you?
"First, I have to give a huge shoutout to my husband, Frank. He is the Tech Director in another district, and his strong, never-ending support is why I wake up every morning. He keeps our family sane, and I could not imagine my life without him. I also cannot say enough times how much I loved the CCTO Mentor Program. Cohort 15 has become a very close group of friends, and many still chat daily on our Slack channel. Laurel Nava in another person I just need to mention because she modeled grace, hard-work, and professionalism for all of us during our program. Her thoughtfulness and presence helped many of us persevere through the program, during one of the toughest years of COVID and distance learning. I also have to give a shout out to past CTO cohort members including, Mike Vollmert, Andrew Schwab, Joe Ayala, Peter Cazanis, Chris Clark, Julie Judd, and so many others who all make me a better person because of their
