Alternating Road Closures on Rt. 53/Old Hicks Road
Traffic delays continue on Rt. 53 and Old Hicks Road due to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) road construction project. Periodic lane closures between Old McHenry Road and Lake Cook Road are causing the delays; lane closures will not occur during peak travel times from 6:00 - 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 - 6:00 p.m. This project is expected to be completed prior to Thanksgiving, weather-permitting. Future updates will be provided in upcoming E-newsletters.  Questions pertaining to this project can be directed to the IDOT Project Manager Jonathan Schumacher at  847-705-4260 or Jonathan.Schumacher@illinois.gov .

Rt. 22 Asphalt Resurfacing Delays

Asphalt resurfacing work managed by the Illinois Department of Transportation continues on Rt. 22 between Quentin Road and Old McHenry Road. This project is expected to last until the end of September, weather-permitting. Significant traffic delays are occurring, and are anticipated to continue through the end of this project. Roadwork begins daily at 7:00 a.m. and ends at 7:00 p.m. Motorists are advised to utilize detours.
Rt. 22 Widening Project Coming This Spring
The Village was recently informed by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) that there are tentative plans for 2020 to widen the section of Route 22 from Quentin Road to Route 83.  The Village of Long Grove has long supported the widening of this 2-lane section with several conditions including limiting the width of the road within the existing right of way (ROW) in order to protect the adjacent 'Long Grove' woods that the Village is named after.  Although the Village's efforts will reduce the impact on the woods, there are a significant number of trees within and adjacent to the ROW that must be removed.  In an effort to offset this impact, the Village approved a contract for roughly $20,000 with landscape architect firm 3D Design. The Village will be hosting a public information meeting in the coming months for residents, to review the conceptual plans and offer input.

Village 'Turns on the Lights'
in the Downtown
Village Tavern owner Chip Ullrich is pictured 'flipping the switch' on downtown streetlights.
New streetlights throughout downtown Long Grove were ceremoniously switched on during the 'Turn on the Lights' event Thursday, September 5, 2019. The downtown was illuminated by the new period street lighting when the flip was switched by longtime Village Tavern owner Chip Ullrich. This is the first time the downtown has had lighting at night since the Village was founded, and more than 100 people came out to witness the historic moment. Among the crowd was Village President Bill Jacob and Village Board members, along with local business owners, residents, and others who took part in the celebration. Ullrich was the master of ceremonies, and has been a longtime advocate for streetlights to encourage shopping and commerce during the evening hours in downtown Long Grove.
Long Grove Resident Wins
Miss Teen USA Pageant
Victoria Blair Rhemrev and Village President Bill Jacob are pictured.
Congratulations to Long Grove resident, Victoria Blair Rhemrev, 16, who was named Miss Illinois Teen USA 2020 earlier this month! Victoria defeated 25 other contestants and will now go on to compete for the title of Miss Teen USA; that competition will be held next spring. In addition to attending Stevenson High School and playing on the volleyball team, Victoria also started her own charity called SheetsFromAPrincess.org. Founded in 2018, the charity's mission is to uplift hospitalized children by visiting them during their hospital stays and leaving them each with a gift. Her platform as a pageant contestant is focused on education for children, and the importance of recycling and living a sustainable lifestyle. Victoria was recognized by Village President Bill Jacob and the Board at the September 10, 2019 Village Board meeting.
Long Grove Prohibits Sale, Public Consumption of  Adult-Use Cannabis
Earlier this year, the State of Illinois adopted a new law allowing municipalities to decide whether or not to allow the sale of adult-use cannabis.  On September 4, 2019, the Long Grove Plan Commission (PC) held a public hearing on this topic, and recommended amending the Village Code to prohibit the sale of adult-use cannabis in Long Grove, as well as prohibit public consumption. The Village Board supported this recommendation and approved the ordinance as recommended by the PC at the September 10, 2019 meeting. For questions, please call Village Hall at 847-634-9440.
Alternative Energy Systems
Following several public hearings, the Village Plan Commission made recommendations to the Village Board on possible amendments to the Village Zoning Code regulation of Alternative Energy Systems (AES) which include solar, wind and geothermal systems. The Village Board heard the recommendations during their September 10, 2019 meeting and continued their consideration of these amendments to the September 24 meeting.  Among other matters, the Village Board not only expressed concerns about the visual impact of these systems for neighbors and the community, but also for the cost of the system permits.
Apple Fest is September 20-22 in Stempel Parking Lot
Chicagoland's biggest tribute to apples will take place in Historic Downtown Long Grove for a 28th anniversary season. Apple Fest's claim-to-fame is the delicious apple-inspired treats for apple lovers young and old, from fresh apple cider donuts and spiced apple lattes, green apple cotton candy and apple sangria. As always with a Long Grove festival, music will play all weekend long on multiple stages spread throughout the fest grounds. And when attendees aren't busy filling up on apple delicacies or rocking out to live tunes, the classic carnival is a refuge of entertainment, as is the Kids Zone with its legendary apple pie-eating contests and ageless interactive gaming. Apple Festers are invited to peruse and shop the timeless Village of Long Grove for harvest treasures while the action plays out on the fest grounds. Visit this link for all the details!
