Friends and family of Dan King gather in his memory, and fundraise for research.

Thank you to the Board of Directors of the Daniel King Memorial Fund. For the past three years, friends of Dan King have gathered for his birthday, October 7th, to raise money for the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation (CCF) in his honor. This October, an amazing $7,000 was raised. In total, the Daniel King Memorial Fund has raised over $17,000. The funds raised each year are specifically earmarked for research. This generous donation will help CCF make progress in our mission to find a cure and improve the quality of life for those affected by cholangiocarcinoma.
Daniel King passed away May 11, 2017 of cholangiocarcinoma. His friends say "Dan was an amazing, kind individual who we lost too soon."
Thank you to his friends and family who honor their good friend by helping those dealing with cholangiocarcinoma. We appreciate your support.

Abbey Sprague is a busy wife, mother of two young children, and works as an HR Talent Acquisition Manager. She enjoys learning about healthcare, eating healthy, and research. She is also a caregiver to her mother. Abbey’s mom was first diagnosed in 2015, and as an only child with an extremely close-knit relationship with her mom this news was exceptionally scary and difficult. So shaken by her mom’s diagnosis, Abbey could not sleep. To combat the stress and anxiety, she began her research. She shares, “I’m a hands on learner, and I needed more information.” Online she discovered the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation (CCF) and the discussion boards and support groups. There she found a phone number of a patient advocate. She was surprised someone had shared their phone number online, and initially was extremely intimidated to pick up the phone and share her story with a complete stranger, yet Abbey was so glad she made the call.
Abbey has been an active volunteer at a local children’s hospital, as her son was born with a rare tumor, so paying it forward is in her nature. She attended the 2019 Annual Conference in Salt Lake City, UT and shortly thereafter got engaged with the research advocacy team. With her interest in healthcare, due to her career experience, and a love of research, this volunteer opportunity seemed like the perfect fit. As a research advocate Abbey has proofed and edited materials for our trusted partner, Ciitizen. The Ciitizen platform helps patients collect, summarize, and share medical records digitally. It can be helpful in seeking second opinions, coordinating with caregivers, and donating records to research. She has also worked to submit blog posts and video testimonials. Abbey wants to shine a brighter light on the patient voice as an advocate. She and her mother have also volunteered as special event coordinators at the Chicago Regional Symposium. This last July, Abbey, along with her friends and family, participated in the inaugural Moving for the Cure event, as they swam across Lake Geneva and raised over a $1,000 for CCF.
Abbey volunteers because she remembers how much fear and desperation she felt when her mother was diagnosed. She felt embraced by the CCF community and volunteers so that she can be that comfortable place for someone else. Abbey volunteers because she wants a cure for cholangiocarcinoma. It is an honor and privilege to recognize Abbey Sprague as Volunteer of the Month.
