SOFTBALL/BASEBALL FIELD TO BE NAMED SPELLMAN FIELD IN HONOR OF STEVE SPELLMAN

Steve Spellman is so much more than a legend. For anyone who has had a relationship with St. Pius X Catholic High School for more than just the last year, we have known him as a strong leader, a compassionate friend, a faithful role model, a kind soul, and a forward-thinking visionary. He set out to ensure that our school would always uphold its Catholic values in everything we do. He encouraged our students to achieve greater heights than they previously imagined, in all aspects of their careers at St. Pius X. He showed us all that being caring is not a sign of weakness, it is a sign of strength. In short, he demonstrated what it is to be “the Lord’s” throughout his tenure.

To show our appreciation for his 20 years of remarkable service to St. Pius X, we are proud to announce that the baseball/softball field at our Seaver Family Sports Complex will be named in honor of Mr. Spellman. Now, whenever it’s time to watch a few innings, we’ll all head over to Spellman Field and enjoy the sights and sounds of a day (or night!) at the ballpark. It is so fitting that Mr. Spellman will forever be connected to this field. In 2008, it was under his direction that St. Pius X acquired the Michelle Court Apartments once situated in that space and expanded the footprint of our campus for the first time in our school’s history. Too many of our athletic teams had to practice or play “home” games elsewhere. He understood that providing precious field space was essential to improving student well-being and assuring that we could live out the mission of forming the mind, body, and spirit of each student effectively.

I can’t begin to count the number of times parents, alumni, supporters, and friends of St. Pius X have said to me that Steve Spellman elevated our school to where it is today. There is no denying it, and now we are glad we can properly celebrate his enduring legacy. For many of us, this is the perfect opportunity to show Mr. Spellman our gratitude for his leadership and to help complete his final vision of a Seaver Family Sports Complex that offers our entire community much-needed, expanded facilities for the next generations of Golden Lions. A gift to our Ring the Bells Capital Campaign, specifically honoring Steve Spellman, would be a beautiful tribute to a man we all know and love and who deserves recognition for his endless dedication to St. Pius X. Thank you, Mr. Spellman…you have made our school a better place. We’ll see you at Spellman Field!

Peace,

ATHLETICS HIGHLIGHTS

Our spring sports are entering the home stretch of the regular season, with several starting postseason as we return from spring break. Three teams are ranked in the state polls of their respective sports. Girls’ soccer and girls’ lacrosse are each ranked No. 5 in AAAAA, while boys’ soccer sits in the No. 6 spot. Spring teams are also a cumulative 20-3 in region or area play.

Baseball has recorded four shutouts in a 6-0 start in the region, while girls’ soccer has allowed just one goal in five region games. Boys’ lacrosse sits at 2-0 in the region and boys’ soccer is 5-1. Girls’ lacrosse scored area wins over GAC and Marist this week. Track & Field placed 23 participants in the top three in their respective events at our home meet last Wednesday.

Both golf teams will head to region tournaments in the next week. The Golden Lion boys finished fifth out of nine teams earlier this week in a field with six of last year’s state champions at the Larry Nelson Invitational hosted by Atlanta Country Club. Leading the St. Pius X effort were seniors Carter Loflin, Shaun Cook, and James McMullan.

The girls’ golf team had a fourth place finish at the Athens Classic High School Girls Tournament on Saturday. Congratulations to senior Neve Thanner who tied for fifth place in the individual competition with a 77 and for being named to the All-Tournament Team.

DID YOU KNOW?

Over the years, St. Pius X has had many variations of the Golden Lion logo. This lion, designed in 2020 by Andrew Mabini '06, is the official St. Pius X Golden Lion logo. Used primarily for athletics, it is the only lion logo currently used at St. Pius X.
