After receiving pressure from advocates for a return to in-person learning this fall, as well as those advocating for the state to mandate virtual learning to begin the school year, Governor Tony Evers last week told reporters "there's no secret plan out there" for him to shutter schools by executive order.

Governor Evers reiterated his support for local decisions regarding local schools. When asked by the media why he did not adopt that same strategy for mask mandates and other orders he or his administration has issued, he said the virus knows no borders between jurisdictions.

"I appreciate the governor's statements that support in-person instruction, but actions speak louder than words, Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald said in response to Evers' comments. "Earlier this spring, the governor flip-flipped on whether to issue a stay-at-home order. He flip-flopped on whether to move the April 7th Election. I'm fearful that he will cave to pressures from liberal groups and backtrack once again."

Governor Evers also repeatedly said he had no plans or intentions to issue a mask mandate in Wisconsin, but declared a public health emergency and signed an emergency order mandating face coverings from August 1st to the end of September.
