Last Sunday, we had a really great first meeting of our Gospel-reading class! We nearly had more people than chairs: a wonderful situation to be in. If you were unable to attend last week, no worries: please attend as you are able.
The format of the class is a mixture of teaching by me and discussion of folks' reading experiences. We have a lovely range of Bible translations being used for this class, which results in a lot of great discussion as we compare/contrast our individual understandings of the same verses. For example, we noticed that in Mark Chapter 1, Verse 41, there was a big discrepancy in translations. This is a verse where Jesus heals a man of leprosy.
Some of our translations say:
- "Moved with pity, Jesus...touched him, and said to him..."Be made clean!"
Others note that the translation might be:
- "Moved with anger, Jesus...touched him, and said..."Be made clean!"
As you can see, the passage reads very differently depending on how it's translated!
For our next meeting (Sunday, January 12), please read Mark Chapters 2 and 3. We will meet at 9:00 a.m. in the library: please feel free to pick up breakfast in the kitchen first and bring it along to the class!

OLD TIME RELIGION

Have you ever wondered what it was like to worship in the early days of Christianity? At the last Friends of the Library Sale at the Paul Sawyier Public Library, I found a book titled, “Going to Church in the First Century,
”
and another titled, ironically, “Welcome to the Episcopal Church.” Reading about the early services, I discovered that they were gatherings of a small number of “Believers” who met in their homes. As a regular participant in the Wednesday Noon Service at Ascension, I noted that this meeting is like a contemporary “House Church” where we gather in a small corner of “God’s House” in the chapel area of the transept and are led by a member of the clergy, ministering to a small number of worshipers and a furry, friendly “Church Dog.”
These and other small group services during Holy Week and on Holy Days are a glimpse of what the early church was like and can still be today. At these services one can experience an “Up Close and Personal” relationship with The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in a reverent setting. As Jesus said, “Whenever two or more gather in my name, I will be there.” At the Wednesday Noon Service, one can experience the Anglican Rosary, a Homily, Prayers, Rite II Holy Eucharist, and Healing Anointing with a group of caring and loving people who will laugh, cry, comfort, and pray for you in an “all for one and one for all” spirit. The Priest will often step into the congregation and seek personal input regarding worshiper’s opinions and experiences concerning the scriptures and social issues.
As stated in the other book that I found and displayed on the sign at the front of the Church of the Ascension, “All Are Welcome” to come and experience the personal blessings at noon on Wednesday much like early Christians did. Thanks be to God!

Check out the new double-sided "sandwich" sign in Ascension's front yard, near the street. The old sign was faded and contained outdated information - the new sign has great visibility! The heavy-duty plastic frame is on wheels and can hold ballast for weight to stay in place; the content inserts are easily interchangeable for updates and special events. Pauline Van Horn spurred the search; Mona Proctor found it through an online vendor, Mike Oder approved the purchase ($200), and Jim King assembled it. Good teamwork!

I am writing to say a heartfelt THANK YOU to our Junior Warden, Jim King. Jim has been faithfully working to fix the sewage smell coming from the kitchen sinks.
What initially looked like a fairly straightforward situation, turned out to be rather complicated and involved not only plumbing issues but also working with the City of Frankfort, which has specific regulations for kitchens like ours.
Fortunately, Jim was not daunted by the pipes, the smell or the red tape! He eventually located the specific source of the problem and got the City to agree to its removal, which was done last weekend.
Thank you, Jim for your hard work on this smelly situation!
