World Dairy Expo 2020 canceled
The World Dairy Expo Executive Committee reached the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 expo based on public health orders and restrictions related to COVID-19, in place and issued by Public Health Madison & Dane County, Wis. World Dairy Expo 2020 was set to take place at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, Wis., Sept. 29 through Oct. 3. The annual event welcomed more than 62,000 attendees from nearly 100 countries in 2019.
IDFA partnership to provide dairy industry with digital readiness
The International Dairy Foods Assn. (IDFA), the nation's largest trade association representing all segments of the dairy industry, and ABB, a global technology leader that is driving the digital transformation of industries, have partnered to offer IDFA members a suite of automated systems, applications and integrated solutions that will help them advance digitalization within their plants and facilities.
Microbiome control in cattle may reduce methane emissions
Researchers with the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) in Israel announced they have learned to control the microbiome of cattle for the first time, which could inhibit their methane production and, therefore, reduce a major source of greenhouse gasses.
Organic equivalence arrangement reached with Taiwan
The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced a new U.S.-Taiwan equivalence arrangement, effective May 30, 2020, that streamlines organic trade with Taiwan. The arrangement allows organic products certified in the U.S. or Taiwan to be sold as organic in either market. It also protects access for American organic farmers, ranchers and businesses to this significant export market. Taiwan is estimated to be the fifth-largest organic export market for U.S. producers.

 Secure your seat today for the premier virtual global dairy science meeting; June 22 - 24, 2020! Most live programming will happen between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm Eastern Daylight Time (GMT/UTC -4). Miss a live event? Don't worry; most live events will be recorded and available for on-demand viewing. Below is a sample of what you can expect at ADSA Virtual Annual Meeting.
  • More than 100 hours of programming will be delivered through 900 scientific presentations. All 900 prerecorded presentations will be released live on Monday, June 22, at 12:01 am (EDT)
  • Exhibitors and sponsors will be showcasing their products and services in the Exhibit Hall and Sponsor Hall. Daily Expo Power Hours will provide focused time where exhibitors will be available to chat live with attendees.
  • Live session panel discussions: Daily live panel discussions arranged by science section and featuring session speakers will be moderated by section chairs. Attendees can participate in the discussion through the chat feature.
  • Live Roundtable Discussions: These 60-minute discussions will be focused on a specific dairy science topic and include one moderator and three to five panelists. Topics currently under consideration and being finalized are Reproduction; Dairy Foods; Production, Management, and the Environment; Ruminant Nutrition; and Teaching and Extension Education. There are more to come, so watch this space!
  • Student Activities: The Graduate Student Division (GSD) and Student Affiliate Division (SAD) have been hard at work adapting a schedule of activities to provide value to graduate and undergraduate students, including career workshops, competitions, and mentoring sessions with professional members, as well as social events.
  • Welcome Desk: Staffed by ADSA volunteer leaders and ADSA staff, the Welcome Desk is a great place to start your Annual Meeting experience. Drop by, ask questions about the Annual Meeting, and network with association staff and leadership.

ADSA Joins 65+ Associations in Signing Open Letter on Importance of Animal Agriculture
ADSA joined more than 65 associations from all over the world in signing this open letter to highlight the importance of livestock production in supporting global nutrition, high standards of food safety and public health during COVID-19. The letter reads, in part: "The coronavirus crisis has brought into focus the incredible public health challenge our world faces, and nowhere is this challenge more apparent than in food production. Nourishing the world during this crisis is a top priority across nations. Our world needs the contributions of livestock. Globally, 1.3 billion people depend on livestock for their employment, while billions more rely on livestock to provide food for their families. Animal agriculture provides milk, meat, fish and eggs at a time when access to safe, nutritious and affordable food is necessary to fend off a potential global hunger crisis, and offers invaluable support for farmers facing severe, often existential, economic hardships. The knowledge and expertise of the livestock sector can help strengthen the global Covid-19 response and tackle the growing risk of nutrition insecurity." How can you take action? ARPAS Online Exams Coming Soon
 Because of summer meeting cancellations and social distancing protocols, the American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists (ARPAS) is currently developing a process to offer remotely proctored online exams. This process is still under development but should be operational by mid to late June. More information will be available on the  ARPAS website  by June 11. Graduate Students: Please note, the ARPAS Foundation pays exam fees for graduate students taking the ARPAS exam for the first time.

NASEM Nutrient Requirements
of Dairy Cows

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) anticipates the 2021 release the 8th revised edition of the "Nutrient Requirements of Dairy Cattle", the world's most highly cited reference on dairy cattle feeding. The 40th Discover Conference will focus on the scientific advancements in dairy cattle feeding used in revising the 2001 edition. NASEM subcommittee members will address the substantive changes in the nutrient requirements and the conceptual approaches used to make those changes. They will report on areas with significant knowledge gaps that still prevent more accurate prediction of the nutrient requirements. We will emphasize the interactive spirit of Discover conferences with structured small group discussions woven into the program, including focused discussions with the speakers. The program will bridge from the fundamental science to applied dairy cattle feeding.
