Dear Cienega Families,
We are finishing up the class schedule registration for the 2020/2021 school year. Current 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students are selecting their choices for next year's class schedule. If your student does not get a chance to register in the next 2 weeks, please have them see his or her counselor as soon as possible.
Vail Pride Day is set for Saturday, February 15
th
at the Pima County Fair Grounds. Student work will be displayed, awards will be given out, and it is a great opportunity for the community to come together. We hope to see you this year at Vail Pride Day.
Lastly, please help us with our annual parent survey. The information we gather from the survey allows us to continue our improvement. Below is the website for the survey.
Your involvement in your child's education is an important part of keeping our Cienega community strong.
Sincerely,
Kim Middleton

The Cienega Science Department is pleased to announce the Second Annual Chem Week 2020 was a success!
January 27-31 was Chemistry Week at Cienega. Every day during PAWS or lunch there was something engaging, exciting and sometimes explosive for students to partake in. AP chemistry students amazed with the pressure of baking soda and vinegar to launch test tubes. Guest speakers Jack Bender and David Morris brought in their chemistry expertise as well as some dangerous demonstrations. Dr. Pollard from the U of A did a Skype question and answer session and then Chem Club finished the week with some rocketry. Cienega students are highly encouraged to take chemistry at Cienega to prepare for college while changing the way you see the world around you.

Intersession's purpose is to give students another opportunity to strengthen their knowledge and skills in the specific standards that most students struggled with during the quarter. This is for any non-honors or non-AP course that is listed on the attached flyer. It does have a fee and has a hybrid setup (in person and online). If your student is interested in increasing his/her grade (up to a maximum of 80%), please refer to the attached flyer on how to register. Click Here to Register.
SEP Intersession
SEP Intersession is mandatory for seniors who have not completed their shadowing hours, turned in their portfolio, or passed their paper. This will take place the first three days of break (March 9th-11th) from 9am-1pm in the Ed. Center. If on the first day your student accomplishes what they need to, and the teacher releases, then they do not need to attend the following days. The purpose of this intersession is to ensure that no one falls behind on this graduation requirement. Your student's teacher (whether English or Government) will sign them up for this and notify you of their need to attend; there is no form.

The AP Physics program took a group and current and future students to Disneyland at the start of the quarter and had a behind the scenes experience like none other! After working with the Disney Education team for weeks, we had a two day physics extravaganza with our imagineer, Joe! We leaned the evolution of the tubular steel rollercoaster (the industry standard), and the physics behind gravity and electromagnetic powered rides; we designed our own attractions for a Disney park, and we spent an hour back stage in the heart of the
Incredicoaster,
where a machinist who maintains the vehicles and the systems that control the ride showed us all of the inner workings of the attraction, including the huge amounts of electrical energy needed to launch each set of cars. Any student interested in engineering or physical sciences should really consider being part of the AP Physics program at Cienega! Adventure is out there! And, in case your worried, Disneyland and California Adventure are still standing... even if we aren't.

COLLEGE AND CAREER

Summer Pre-College Programs
It's never too early to get a jump on summer plans and get started on applications for summer pre-college programs. In fact, many summer programs have application deadlines that fall between January and March. There are quite a few to choose from if for students who are looking for opportunities that will give them a taste of college life. Pre-college programs have many benefits including,
the ability to experience on-campus life, college classes and learn more about potential majors. There are many opportunities to choose from in-state and beyond Arizona. Take a look at this partial listing.
Arizona State University
University of Arizona
Medicine
Science
Engineering
Business
Northern Arizona University
Out of State
Carnegie Mellon University
Carnegie Mellon's
Summer Academy for Mathematics and Science
is a six-week residential experience that provides students from underrepresented communities who have interest in computer science, engineering and/or the natural sciences, with the opportunity to achieve skills in order to pursue and complete majors in STEM fields. There are no tuition, housing or dining fees for students selected to attend this program.
Stevens Institute of Technology
All of our programs are carefully designed by our faculty to be creative, project-driven, hands-on immersions that give you not just real college experience, but real-world experience too. By night you'll live in the dorms, by day you'll visit major corporations, work on a tangible project and learn alongside experts. You can choose to participate in more than one program during the summer, as long as the program dates don't overlap.
Stanford University
Stanford Pre-Collegiate Summer Institutes is a three-week summer residential program held on Stanford campus that provides academically talented and intellectually curious students currently in grades 8-11 with intensive study in a single course.
Texas Tech
Summer Gateway is an excellent alternative for high school students wishing to gain admission to Texas Tech University. Students who successfully complete this program will be guaranteed admission to Texas Tech for the following fall.
Free Summer Programs
Many of the programs listed on this website are free or offer full scholarships.
These programs offer a range of focuses from media, civic engagement, banking, business, coding, leadership, and journalism, to science and math.
Participation in pre-college summer programs help students to become familiar with college life while also helping them to decide about their future majors and career paths.
