Dear Lower School Families,

It has been a longstanding MPH tradition to conclude the calendar year with a Winter Program that features variety of musical performances from our Lower School students. Returning families will remember that the program begins with the choral singing of “One Little Candle.” The lyrics are below and, as you can see, it is a beautiful song about the power of spreading kindness and love.

Since we’re not able to gather or sing together during this winter season, we discussed “One Little Candle” in each Kindergarten through fifth-grade class and reflected upon the lyrics as a poem. We talked about the symbolism of light in the darkness, as well as the incredible power of good deeds, kindness, and love.

The students participated in discussions that were filled with a sense of hope, resilience, joy, and gratitude, and then each created artwork to represent this positive light. As we listened to a recording of the 2018 Lower School chorus perform this song as part of our 150th MPH Anniversary Winter Program, pictures of candles, light, love, family, friends, pets, home, favorite memories, and hobbies that make their hearts happy all emerged.

Please enjoy the slideshow below, complete with the shining eyes and heartfelt light shared by each of our Lower School students.

Take such care,
Amy
One Little Candle
Music by George Mysels
Lyrics by Joseph Maloy Roach

It is better to light just one little candle,
Than to stumble in the dark…
Far better to light just one little candle,
All you need is a tiny spark!

If we'd all say a prayer that the world would be free,
A wonderful world that this would be,
And, if everyone lit just one little candle,
What a bright world this would be!
