OGA Weekly Newsletter
Welcome back to school and happy new year! The Office of Global Activities (OGA) is dedicated to connecting MSW students to international social work opportunities through  funding special programs , academic resources, internationalized curriculum, and  arranging faculty and student exchanges  at partner institutions.
Spotlight of the Week
OGA Event Grant
OGA offers event grants to the School of Social Work students who would like to propose and plan an event with a global theme.

Last semester, we sponsored two wonderful events: Voices From Around the World: A Mental Health Art Exhibit, let by Mental Health Matters (MHM), and Screening and Discussion: 3/11/11 Loss and Recovery, let by Matthew Bouse. We highly encourage folks who are interested in hosting a global-themed event in Winter 2020 to send us proposals. If you have any questions, please feel free to email us!
Professional Opportunities
Graduate Student Summer Travel Fellowships
These fellowship awards provide financial and logistical support of $5,500 to fellowships focused broadly on addressing, evaluating, or improving global labor standards and monitoring. Two fellowships will be awarded. The University of Michigan President's Advisory Committee on Labor Standards and Human Rights (PACLSHR) helps support fellowships that contribute to the University's effort to improve international labor standards. AIF Clinton Fellowship for Service in India
Deadline: Monday, January 20
The American India Foundation's (AIF)  Clinton Fellowship for Service in India  is an immersive and interdisciplinary experiential learning program that places young professionals in service with communities across India. AIF selects, trains, and supports Fellows through professional development and mentoring. In partnership with local NGOs, Fellows learn about inclusive leadership in poverty reduction. The program is fully funded by AIF. Learn more
Volunteer to be a Conversation Circle Facilitator for Winter 2020

Are you looking for a fun and different way to get involved with life on campus? Interested in meeting new people from around the world? Then consider facilitating an ELI Conversation Circle. Many current U-M students, faculty, and staff are invited to volunteer to facilitate a Conversation Circle. No previous experience is required. You just need to be a fluent speaker of English who is very knowledgeable about U.S. culture and be willing to commit an hour a week of your time. First-time facilitators are asked to attend a one-hour orientation session. Learn more
CGIS Program Assistant Positions for Spring/Summer 2020
The  Center for Global and Intercultural Study  (CGIS) is hiring two program assistants for the upcoming Spring/Summer 2020 terms in Spain and France.

Peace Corps Response: Is it for you?
Peace Corps Response (PCR)  is a short term, high impact volunteer opportunity open to returned Peace Corps Volunteers or those with significant professional and technical experience. This 3 to 12 month experience may be of interest to graduating Coverdell Fellows participants or any faculty or staff who wishes to become a Peace Corps Volunteer but cannot commit to the traditional 2 year program.

Grant Opportunities
FLAS Fellowships
Deadline: Wednesday, January 15
Tuition support and a stipend for students studying designated foreign languages in combination with area studies or international aspects of professional studies. Eligible languages taught on U-M campus: Quechua, Nahuatl, Portuguese, Yoruba. Open to undergraduates, master's, and doctoral students. Must be US citizens or permanent residents. Learn more
Alumni Board of Governors (BOG) Practicum Award
Deadline: late January
The Alumni Board of Governors Award helps meet the growing needs of U-M MSW students who pursue national and global experiences. Applicant must be admitted into a SSW approved national or global field placement site or a global independent study project for which they are seeking support. Learn more
International Institute Individual Fellowship
Deadline: mid February
The International Institute Individual Fellowships are designed to support University of Michigan students, regardless of citizenship, who are enrolled in a degree program and wish to participate in internships or conduct research abroad. To be eligible for this award students must spend at least 1 month abroad, with a 30-hour-per-week time commitment. Award amounts are up to $5,000. Learn more
Raoul Wallenberg Interntaional Summer Travel Award
Deadline: Saturday, February 15
Are you interested in a community service project or civic participation program abroad? Apply for the  Raoul Wallenberg International Summer Travel Award ! Awards are available for undergraduate and graduate students of all citizenships. OGA Global Conference Grant
Deadline: mid February
The Office of Global Activities (OGA) offers funding every other year to MSW and PhD students who submit an abstract and are accepted to present at either the Joint World Conference on Social Work Education and Social Development or the IFSW Global Social Work Conference. Students who apply to this grant are required to be enrolled students at SSW during the global conferences. Learn more information including overview and eligibility here .
Mary Sue & Kenneth Coleman Global Experience Fund
Deadline: mid March
This opportunity is being offered to students by past University of Michigan President Mary Sue Coleman who wanted to ensure that more students travel abroad to experience other cultures firsthand, seek solutions to world problems and learn to thrive in a dynamic global environment.   Learn more

Mental Health Task Force Town Hall for Graduate Students

A significant number of graduate students experience psychological distress. This task force hopes to expand the current focus on graduate-student persistence and graduation to a more holistic wellness approach. Their aim is to provide faculty, students, and staff with a better understanding that well-being and academic performance are interdependent and dynamic.

United Way of Washtenaw County's 21-DAY Equity Challenge

The Ginsberg Center is proud to be a support partner in the  United Way of Washtenaw County’s 21-day Equity Challenge . With a commitment of just 10-15 minutes per day, the 21-day virtual, self-guided challenge provides participants with tools and examples to broaden understanding and work towards building racial equity and justice.
