Why the Bridge Community Loves the YMCA
|
|
Without the Wood River Community YMCA, it would be challenging, if not impossible, to have Sun Valley Bridge Club games.
The Y began hosting the Wednesday games a few years ago. We strengthened our relationship this past fall, and now have both Wednesday and Friday games at the Y. The location is bright and cheerful, and your directors are particular pleased because they don't have to carry six suitcases of supplies to and from the games each week
In appreciation, we'll have our annual party and fundraiser for the YMCA on Feb. 26. In addition to hosting bridge games, the YMCA offers 43 community programs. Last year it provided $878,000 in financial assistance so that everyone can participate. We hope you will be as generous as you can in supporting the Y.

Three Ways the YMCA Helps the Community
|
|
Drowning is the second leading cause of childhood deaths in Idaho. The Y's free program teaches every 2nd grader in Blaine County to
swim.
|
|
LiveSTRONG helps
cancer survivors regain physical activity.
|
|
The
POWER Scholars Academy
is a free six-week program to combat the loss of math and reading skills over the summer.

Chuck's Corner:
Leading a Sequence
You must have a sequence of
three to lead an honor against a notrump contract. A sequence of
two is fine against a suit contract.
Remember: When you lead an honor, you promise the next lower honor and deny the next higher one. For example, leading a king promises the queen and denies the ace.

How Would You Bid This Hand?
* * *
Only one pair bid this hand correctly in a recent Sun Valley Bridge game.
The partnership got a top board.
|
|
|
February Bridge Tip: Never Preempt a Preempt
Why? When an opponent makes a preemptive opening with a weak hand at the 2- or 3-level, he is saying that he does not expect to make his bid. He is willing to sacrifice to prevent your side from finding a good contract. If your opponent is willing to sacrifice, why do you want to sacrifice instead?
If you bid after your opponent preempts, you are promising a
sound opening hand (12+ total) points. Your partner should be able to trust your bid.

Our Oldest and Youngest Players
Jackie Wieman, 94, is our oldest player. Our youngest is
Grace Stribling-Hough, 22, who has been playing at our club since she was 16.
Jackie, a native of Switzerland, came to the US in 1948 because of her parents' business interests in New York. She married an American, learned bridge and has been playing ever since.
Grace is a senior at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, N.Y., where she has a double major in environmental studies and studio arts. Her grandparents,
Georgia and Todd Stewart, taught her to play bridge when she was 13. Georgia subsequently invited Grace to play at Sun Valley Bridge one summer. This past Jan. 8, Grace and Georgia came in first. Grace's sister,
Esme, is an occasional player at our club.
