2020 Online Summer Reading
Programs Start Saturday!

The "Imagine Your Story" virtual summer reading programs kick off online
, starting this Saturday, June 20, and running through Thursday, August 13, 2020.

There are programs for everyone, including children, teens and adults. Prizes for reading and participating in a variety of online and at-home activities will be awarded for all ages. New this year is the Beanstack Tracker mobile app where you can participate right from your mobile device. We've also added the ability to create accounts for the entire family, making it easier than ever to join in the fun.

The free Beanstack app can be downloaded from your device's app store for both iOS and Android operating systems. Please note that the app does not currently allow you to post picture reviews or upload activity photos -- you'll need to do that through the  Beanstack website.

For patrons without access to the internet at home, or for those looking for a screen-free activity, you can request a packet of print materials from the Library. Please contact Amanda Meyer, Children's Librarian, at 508/946-2470.

If you'd like more detailed news and information about summer reading programs, look in future issues of this newsletter, call 508/946-2470, or visit our  website or  Facebook page.

The Imagine Your Story Summer Reading programs are sponsored by the Massachusetts Library System, the Boston Bruins, and the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, and supported through the generosity of the Friends of the Middleborough Public Library. The Beanstack summer reading platform is made possible by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners with funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and with the assistance of the Massachusetts Library System.

Everything You Always  Wanted to Know About OverDrive and the Libby App  But Were Afraid to Ask

T he "Big Library Read" has returned!   It's a chance for all library card holders to
read the same digital title at the same time without any wait lists or holds. It's like a worldwide digital version of a local book club.

This season's selection is The Darwin Affair, by Tim Mason, and r uns from June 22 through July 1 3.  The scene is London, June 1860. When an assassination attempt is made on Queen Victoria, and a petty thief is gruesomely murdered moments later--and only a block away--Chief Detective Inspector Charles Field quickly surmises that these crimes are connected to an even more sinister plot. Was Victoria really the assassin's target? Are those closest to the Crown hiding something? And who is the shadowy figure witnesses describe as having lifeless, coal-black eyes?   Mason has created a rousing page-turner that both Charles Dickens and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle would relish and envy.

You can read a letter from author Tim Mason about his latest work, and review a Discussion Guide here.

If you're new to borrowing e-books and digital audio books from the Library's OverDrive collection, start  at the "Help" pages. For assistance, email Reference Librarian  Libby Fox  and she'll get back to you and try to help.

New Teen Reads:  Imagine That!

The wonderful thing about reading is being able to immerse youself so completely in a story that you become the character, experiencing their emotions, enduring their hardships, and glimpsing times and worlds we can only imagine.  Here are some new worlds to discover ...

Burn by Patrick Ness
In 1957, Sarah Dewhurst and her father, outcasts in their little town of Frome, Washington, are unaware that the dragon Kazimir they hired to work their farm has come because of a  prophecy involving a deadly assassin, a cult of dragon worshippers, two FBI agents and somehow, Sarah Dewhurst herself.   Grades 8-12.

The Loop by Ben Oliver
Enduring a tortuous existence on a futuristic death row for teens where inmates can delay their execution date in exchange for becoming laboratory subjects, Luka uncovers rumors about chaos spreading throughout the outside world before he becomes targeted by his crazed fellow prisoners.  Grades 9-12.

Song of Wraiths and Ruin  by Roseanne A. Brown
The first in a gripping fantasy duology inspired by West African folklore in which a grieving crown princess and a desperate refugee find themselves on a collision course to murder each other despite their growing attraction.  Grades 9-12.

"Your Two Cents Worth"--   Quick Tips to Help Manage    Your Account

When describing our curbside pickup service, you may have noticed we mention that we currently can only provide you with items from our library, as material sharing between libraries hasn't resumed yet.  (See curbside delivery article above.)

Do you know how to find those Middleboro items when you search for something in our catalog?  Starting at the SAILS website , you can click on the box that says "Everything" near the little house button in the grey bar across the top of the page.  Just choose "Search Middleboro Titles" from the drop-down box, and you're all set.

You also can do this on the mobile app by using the "Search by Library" feature on the second screen of the app (swipe left to get there).
This Week's Marvelous  "Museum Pass"

Old Ironsides may be off-limits in person right now, but the virtual U.S.S. Constitution Museum is always open and offers a variety of wonderful resources.

You can explore the ship via a video tour, meet members of the crew, learn all about the ship's history, explore the museum's collections, try Family Fun & Games at home with a downloadable activity book, and play four different online games like "Meet Your Shipmates" and "Sail to Victory."
Spotlight on a Local Hero --  Josh Kantor, Organist for  the Boston Red Sox

What do you do when Major League Baseball has closed every ball field in America, including your beloved Fenway, and it's your job to make music and entertain the fans?

Josh Kantor, organist for the Boston Red Sox since 2003, has found a way to connect with fans and give something back.  Since the stay-at-home order started, he's been offering a live-streamed daily concert on Facebook.  Every afternoon at 3:00 p.m., you can go to his Facebook page, the 7th-Inning Stretch, and listen to Josh play baseball-themed favorites and a huge range of other genres.  He even takes requests, just like at the ballpark.  Submit them in the comments section of his page.

Josh and his wife, Mary, who is a minister, decided to ask people enjoying the show to make a donation to their local food bank.  Middleborough residents can donate to the St. Vincent de Paul location, or for other towns, go to FeedingAmerica.org.
