To our Sport for Life champions,
Going into 2021, we all have an opportunity to reshape the way we promote, share and discuss physical literacy and quality sport, particularly in the digital space. Whether it’s through online resources or virtual initiatives, we here at Sport for Life are excited to see these new opportunities unfold, and explore opportunities for collaboration and innovation.
In this month’s newsletter, we reflect on the 2021 Virtual Sport for Life Canadian Summit, share the digitally-driven BASIN Plays initiative in the Columbia Basin, and sit down with PLAYBuilder partner Ringette Canada for a quick Q&A. We also highlight an upcoming webinar that will be delivered in French.

PLAYBuilder Q&A with Kelsey McIntosh of Ringette Canada
Kelsey McIntosh is Ringette Canada’s technical director in Ottawa, Ontario, where they promote and lead the development of ringette across the country. Ringette Canada started using PLAYBuilder in 2019, to ensure content for their various programs was organized, up-to-date, and easily accessible for all of their coaches. Sport for Life connected with McIntosh to hear how that’s working out so far.

Basin PLAYS brings online physical literacy and quality sport resources to the Columbia Basin
Columbia Basin Trust faces a unique challenge when trying to bring people together to promote physical literacy and quality sport across their region: distance. With communities that span the length of the Canadian portion of the Columbia River Basin, Columbia Basin Trust supports the ideas and efforts of people from Valemount, B.C. in East Central B.C., to Creston, B.C. along the U.S. border.

Impacting the Pathway to Policy: The 2021 Virtual Sport for Life Canadian Summit
From January 26-29 and February 2-4, Sport for Life hosted the 2021 Virtual Sport for Life Canadian Summit — the first virtual Summit in our history.
Over 1,200 attendees participated in seven days of sessions, keynotes, Q&As, and town halls surrounding the theme of Pathway to Policy.
From the Foundation of the Pathway stream, through the Athlete Pathway, the Pathway for a Healthy and Active Life, the Pathway for Everyone, and finally the Quality Sport Contributing to Sustainable Development Goals stream — as well as two Francophone Days — all registrants had the chance to engage in challenging and thought-provoking conversations around the core concepts of Long-Term Development. This included discussions around physical literacy, quality sport, inclusion, and lifelong accessibility, and how to use sport policy effectively to provide quality experiences for everyone with sustainable best practices.
All of the recorded presentations will be available on the Whova platform until May 7. If you didn’t attend the Summit but want to view the recordings, you can register to view them.

Competition Review and Restructuring: What's Working, What's Next
Competition is a good servant but a poor master. Meaningful competition is essential for athlete development and is a key factor of Long-Term Development. Sport for Life has been supporting organizations to review their competition structures and develop new competition formats, modified rules and stage-appropriate periodized competition calendars for years. Which competition restructuring initiatives have made the biggest impact? What works, what have we learned, and what are the next steps?
In this webinar, Long-Term Development Advisors André Lachance and Sylvie Béliveau will share insights from work with Canadian sport organizations and discuss how every sport organization can continue to evaluate and adapt competition programs to enhance the development of all athletes.
This webinar will be presented in French.
Date: Thursday, March 4, 2021, 10-11:30 a.m. PST / 1-2:30 p.m. EDT

Durable by Design: Active for Life
This document presents a vision for reversing the trend towards obesity, inactivity, and sedentary behaviour in Canada. It is about a future Canada characterized not by chronic disease and sedentary behaviour, but instead by regular physical activity and chronic health on a mass scale. It is about reframing our attitudes towards activity and aging to foster individuals who are “durable by design.”
