New Child Restraint Laws in Illinois
|
New laws dictating how children must be restrained in vehicles went into effect on January 1, 2019. The Illinois Child Passenger Protection Act requires children under the age of two (2) to ride in a rear-facing safety seat, while children under the age of eight (8) must be secured in an age-appropriate child restraint system. An age-appropriate child restraint system fits the child, and the vehicle, and follows manufacturer's guidelines. Every individual who is transporting a child or children under the age of eight (8) years of age is responsible for properly securing them in a vehicle. For violators, a first offense is $75, and the second and each subsequent violation will cost the motorist $200. Please visit the
Illinois Secretary of State website
for additional information.

WM Rate Increases Effective
February 1, 2019
|
The new waste hauling contract with Waste Management (WM) will go into effect on February 1, 2019 and will include a new service, in addition to a roughly 17% increase for residential rates. Click
here for more information on these new rates. The new contract with WM was the least disruptive proposal and provided the same high level of service that Long Grove residents have become accustomed to over the last 20 years, relative to other bids received by the Village of Long Grove. Once the Village Board approved the contract, subsequent negotiations were held between the company and Village Board members, which resulted in a reduction in rates compared to the initial pricing for Long Grove residents. The rate increase will be seen on invoices from WM that were sent out on January 15. The additional service available to residents through the new contract is residential electronics recycling pickup. Prior to this new contract, WM had been the Village's waste hauling service provider since 1998. For additional information about waste hauling services, please contact WM at
800-964-8988 or visit
wm.com.

Credit: Lake County. |
|
A new service called 'Property Check' is available to Lake County homeowners to help fight against property theft and mortgage fraud. Lake County Recorder of Deeds, Mary Ellen Vanderventer, implemented the service which is free and available 24/7. It enables residents to sign up through the Recorder's website to receive notifications when a document has been recorded against a specific name or property (residential address) via email and/or text message. Lake County residents can sign up
here
. Residents who do not have access to a computer can call 847-377-2575 for assistance to sign up for this service.

Clear Snow Away from Dryer Vents
|
Snow accumulations near dryer vents can increase the number of carbon monoxide (CO) incidents and detector activations. These notifications occur because blocked vents can affect air intakes and cause furnaces or water heaters to stop operating. Many of the newer high-efficiency furnaces do not have automatic shut-offs for when vents are blocked. If they fail to shut off, CO can build up in the home, causing serious health threats for occupants, and even death in some cases. Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include headaches, dizziness and weakness, nausea and vomiting, stinging eyes, sleepiness and heart flutters.
In addition to ensuring snow does not block dryer vents on the outside of the home, residents should also make sure carbon monoxide detectors are in working order on the inside of the home, and that the manufacturer date is within the last 10 years. If the detector is older than this, it is time for it to be replaced. Please visit
this link for more information about CO and additional safety tips.
