International Human Rights Day

Human Rights are the rights inherent to all human beings, regardless of race, sex, nationality, ethnicity, language, religion, or any other status.

Human rights include the rights of life and liberty, freedom from slavery and torture, freedom of opinion and expression, the right to work and education, and many more.
Human Rights Day is celebrated annually across the world on December 10th. The date was chosen to honor the United Nations General Assembly adoption and proclamation in 1948 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The declaration has inspired more than 60 human rights policies and conventions, addressing rights for children, minorities, the imprisoned, migrants and refugees, to name a few. They also created guidance on health, war crimes, discrimination and marriage. All of these together constitute the international standard of human rights.

It is important to recognize the significant gains made. We must also remember that we still have a lot of work to do to achieve equity, equality, justice, human rights, and dignity for all.

A series of international human rights treaties and other instruments adopted since 1945 have expanded the body of international human rights law. They include the convention on the prevention and punishment of the Crime of Genocide (1948), the international convention on the Elimination of all forms of Racial Discrimination (1965), the convention on the Elimination of all forms of discrimination against Women (1979), the Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989) and the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (2006) among others.
