Guidance News from Mrs. McAboy

Emotion Management

In Guidance classes we have been learning how to manage strong feelings before feelings escalate and result in negative consequences.

Recognize how strong feels affect our bodies and brains:

  • Focus attention on our bodies for clues about how we are feeling.
  • Understand that when you feel strong feelings the feeling part of the brain, the amygdala reacts, making it hard to think clearly.
  • Recognize that thinking about your feelings, helps the thinking part of the brain, the cortex, start to get back into control

Managing strong Feelings

  • Use positive self-talk
  • communicate assertively
  • Use the Calm down steps

Calming down Steps:

  • Stop-use your signal
  • Name your feeling
  • Calm down:
  • Breathe
  • Count
  • Use positive self-talk
