Join the Born Learning Academy!

The United Way of the Quad Cities is offering Born Learning workshops at several different locations this spring, including 3 being held at Skip-a-Long centers!

Born Learning Academy is a series of six workshops for parents with a child who hasn't yet entered kindergarten and/or is expecting a child. All academies are limited to 20 families at each location and are available on a first come, first served basis. Academies include:
  • Free dinner
  • Free child care
  • Giveaways for children and parents
  • A tablet for each family that attends five of the six workshops

Conscious Discipline: Consequences
Punishments and consequences are not the same! Conscious Discipline focuses on consequences in lieu of punishments. Consequences are positive interactions that help children understand their mistakes, give them opportunities to reflect and learn, and teach them how to be responsible and solve problems. Health & Wellness: Vital Nutrients
There are nine key nutrients every child needs in their diet. Including all of these nutrients on a daily basis helps children receive the well-balanced diet they need.

  1. Protein
  2. Carbohydrates
  3. Fats
  4. Calcium
  5. Iron
  6. Folate
  7. Fiber
  8. Vitamin A
  9. Vitamin C

Early Childhood Education in Illinois
There have been several positive changes for Early Childhood Education in Illinois lately. Here are some highlights:

  • Change in eligibility requirements and family co-pays for the Child Care Assistance Program (more families qualify!)

  • Increase in child care reimbursement rates for center and home-based providers

  • Investment into more training programs for the early childhood workforce
