Ways to have a mission minded Christmas

With this year's world events it can be difficult to keep missions in the forefront of our mind. However, this year I would challenge you to integrate missions into your giving.

Gift exchange with a twist
We are all familiar with the traditional white elephant gift exchange this year add a twist and revamp the white elephant gift exchange for a missions focus. Bring gifts with a country, region or missionary in mind. For instance, depending on the country of focus bring chopsticks, coffee, note card or a souvenir from a trip you have taken in the past that foreign country. In each gift include a prayer request from this world area. Take turns praying through the requests.

Send our LINKS Missionaries a Christmas card
Send our missionaries a personal Christmas card and a note letting them know you are praying for them. To view our NWIL Links missionaries visit  http://www.nwilnaz.org/links/
If you would like send a monetary gift to our missionaries for Christmas please send the check to our district treasurer Ray Barker.

Missions Focused Christmas Tree
Decorate a mission focused Christmas tree in your house or Sunday school room. This is a creative reminder to pray specifically for our missionaries. Have kids construct colorful paper ornaments that showcase either a photo of a missionary family or a picture of the people your missionaries serve. On the back, paste a description of a specific ministry need. The ornament can then be taken home and hung on their own Christmas tree as a reminder to pray for that missionary and their needs.

Maybe you have creative ways to keep a mission focus this Christmas. Please send me your ideas or post on Facebook and tag me in your pictures.  I would love to hear how you are keeping mission focused this year.
-Carole Eatock

From our entire council we want to wish you a Christ filled Christmas!

Global NYI
Calling our generation to a dynamic life in Christ

In Evangelism, we are called to BE God's light in the dark and ignored places of our world. We are to BE a faithful example of God's unconditional love. In BEING in Christ and BEING with others, we allow the Holy Spirit to work through our lives and we trust God with the results.

Through Discipleship, we journey together with other believers as we follow in the footsteps of Jesus. As we DO life together, we learn what it means to talk together, serve together, sacrifice together, fall and get back up together. We DO the hard work of becoming more like our Savior, living surrendered lives in community.

In Leadership Development, we challenge and empower youth and their leaders to GO out into their communities as models of Christ's servant leadership. We cannot afford to wait until we think we know enough; we must GO now, learning along the way.

Our NWIL Area Quiz was online for November 2020. Nine quizzers participated in the Red Level Quiz. Students from Rockford, Lewistown and Smithfield were represented. I am so proud of them! There were three Ribbons, two bronze medals, two silver and two gold. For the Blue Level, there were eighteen who participated from Havana, Pekin First, Galesburg, Smithfield, and Lewistown. There was one ribbon, three bronze, four silver and ten gold medals. I am so proud of each of them. They were allowed to boost their score by quoting bible verses. I love it that these children have worked so hard to understand Exodus Dig Sites 1-7 and have done the verses.

Family COTN
All For One and One For All isn't just a Malden Musketeer cheer it is also what guides the Family COTN youth group. The youth groups verse of Ecclesiastes 4:12b "A cord of three strands is not quickly broken," compelled them to want to help others when they heard about what Alabaster funds do, through a building activity.

They realized how blessed they were to have not just the school gym to meet in, without charge, but also the Village Hall, when the school was unavailable.   They challenged themselves to raise $40, then $50, until a new student yelled out, "come on we can raise $200.00." During the month of October, they sent out weekly reminders about the challenge and I was not surprised at the end of the month when they counted $225.78 for Alabaster.  GO MUSKETEERS.

Tabitha's Hands
When Tabitha's Hands started from an inquiry about a van from the recently closed Children's Home in Princeton. We did not know how long it would be needed, but we never thought it would still be running and very much depended on eighteen years later.

On the two hottest days in August of 2002 a handful of volunteers from, what was then called Princeton Church of the Nazarene, loaded up several trucks of furniture and household items, from the closing Covenant Children's Home, to one of many temporary housings to be used in a way we did not yet know.

Through word of mouth and a couple of news paper articles we quickly came to understand the needs of the residence of Bureau County. We went through the furniture we had gotten from the Children's Home before we even knew what we were doing and had to send out a plea to the community for future donations.

In 2006 we officially became a not-for-profit and in 2012 we were recognized as a Nazarene Compassionate Ministry Center.

We are still learning and developing this ministry and we are still in need. COVID has slowed down furniture donations and financial giving, but the need has not stopped growing.

Our goal has never been to be a furniture moving business. It has always been to help individuals and families move toward self-sufficiency, by providing basic household needs (beds, couches, dressers, lamps ect.), gas vouchers and financial assistance when available.

We assess needs by doing home visits, which allows us into their homes and lives in a way a second-hand store cannot do. We look, listen and learn from these visits, which better helps us help them, mentally, physically and spiritually.

Last year we delivered to over 80 households and we picked up from just as many donors by referrals from local agencies such as the Red Cross, Tri-County Opportunities, Freedom House, Health Department, Bureau County Housing Authority, School, Churches, United Way and many more. Those deliveries or pick-ups could be a bed or a WHOLE house full of furniture. Our dedicated volunteers haul up flights of stairs and down narrow hallways week after week grateful to be in service and grateful to be blessed with all they need.

Please pray for us as we seek God's direction for this next year and for financial provision in order to continue if that be His will.

~WORSHIP DIRECTOR POSITION~

Global Service of Thanks
The Global Service of Thanks brought together more than 45,000 Nazarenes around the world from 21-22 November. The one-hour service was live streamed on multiple platforms in the denomination's five main languages: English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, and Korean.

"What a great blessing it has been to hear and read the response of the global church to the Global Service of Thanks," said Fili Chambo, chair of the Board of General Superintendents. "The participation in and response to this service is a testimony to the depth and strength of the bond and connectedness of the global Nazarene family. May we continue to be faithful to our covenant to journey together as the Lord continues His transformational work in and through us."

The service highlighted the global church family in many ways, beginning with a piano special from Hiram Galvez, a Nazarene missionary on the Eurasia Region. He was followed by a compilation of worship leaders from around the globe who led the global church in a time of worship. The three songs were sung in seven different languages.
"[It] brings images of what heaven will be like, worshiping together!" wrote Darla Kearce of Tennessee.
Nazarenes from all corners of the globe participated in an interactive reading of Psalm 136, sharing about God's love in more than 20 languages.

The Board of General Superintendents then delivered a message about giving thanks despite the unusual year. They highlighted Paul's letter to the church of Philippi, where Paul discusses giving thanks to God. In closing, they invited the global church to embrace an attitude of thankfulness amid the challenges we are facing and urged them to have hope and joy in the midst of the pandemic.

"Thank God for this timely message. I can't thank Him enough for many, many blessings in my life and that of my family," said John Opiyo, who watched from Africa. "He is present even sometimes in the middle of huge challenges."

The 24-hour live stream was available through Facebook Live and Church Online in addition to being available for download on Vimeo. In just the Church Online stream, viewers attended the service for more than 200,000 minutes cumulatively.

"This service was more impactful than we could have ever imagined," said Bill Sawyer, chief administrative officer. "This unique season required a new method of connection for the global church, and it has paid off by bringing together more people than any single General Assembly service in our history."

Viewers were able to interact in the comment section of both streaming platforms, bringing together Nazarenes from Minnesota to Papa New Guinea, to London, to South Africa.

"I have so many brothers and sisters from different places in the world," wrote Diva Inquiltupa of Chile. "I am part of the global Nazarene church, from Arica, Chile, to the whole world."

Among the many reactions, Pastor Sol Ye Lee from Korea summed up the experience by saying "I am proud."

Olivet - Preaching & Music Ambassadors
Greetings from Olivet Nazarene University!

As we wrap up a very unpredictable fall of 2020, we are expectantly looking towards the spring of 2021. Today we begin the scheduling process for the Preaching and Music Ambassadors program for the spring of 2021. We would love to partner with you in ministry by sending a Preaching or Music Ambassador to your church during the spring semester.

You can select a date that works for your church and we will send a student or students to preach and/or lead worship. There is no financial obligation to the local church - Olivet is taking care of all the travel expenses with the help of individual donors. However, it would be helpful if someone from the church could house the student on Saturday evening and provide a lunch on Sunday after church. Your congregation is also welcome to take a love offering for the student(s).

If you are interested in hosting a Preaching or Music Ambassador, please visit this link to fill out a request form by December 11th. Once all the requests are in, we will put together a tentative spring 2021 schedule and send that out to you by January 11th . In light of COVID-19, this schedule is subject to change depending upon university regulations. However, we are hoping and praying for the opportunity to visit your church in the spring of 2021.

This program is committed to the mentoring and transformation of the lives of the students that are a part of the program, and we believe that a major part of that mentoring and transformation happens when our students are given the opportunity to come to your churches. We are beyond grateful for the pastors and congregations that have welcomed our students over the years and have certainly made an impact on their lives!
If you have any specific questions, please email us at pama@olivet.edu or call 815-936-3992. We look forward to working with you!

Spiritual Formation over 200 books to choice from

John Wesley

At its heart, the theology of John Wesley stressed the life of Christian holiness: to love God with all one's heart, mind, soul and strength, and to love one's neighbour as oneself. Wesley's teaching also stressed experiential religion and moral responsibility.

What people think affects what they do, and what people do affects what they think.

There is no better illustration of this adage than John Wesley, the pivotal founder of Methodism. For Wesley, thinking and living went hand in hand.

John Wesley: His Life and Thought introduces readers to both Wesley's story and his beliefs. By neither leaning too much on biography nor focusing solely on theology, this book offers a balanced and accessible portrait that couches Wesley's beliefs and ideas firmly within his life story. There are no minutiae or scholarly controversies here. This book paints in broad strokes the key events in Wesley's life that not only influence his thinking but also his approach to the church, the Methodist movement, and the society and world beyond.

For anyone wanting a sound but lucid introduction to Wesley and his life and work, this book should be at the top of the list. It doesn't just familiarize the reader with Wesley but paves the way for deeper study.

What did John Wesley think about alcohol, music, and popularity? What are his thoughts on education, free will, and joy?
From absolution to zeal, Quotable Wesley is a treasury of quotations taken from Wesley's letters, sermons, tracts, and journal entries on a variety of wide-ranging topics. Here is an essential resource for teachers, Christian leaders, pastors, and laypeople fascinated by the insights of this remarkable founder of the Methodist movement. Useful for sermon preparation, teaching, and individual reflection, this book is designed to supplement the library of anyone interested in Wesley and his work.

30 Days with Wesley a Prayer Book
Experience prayer as a special means of grace.
Filled with prayers, Psalms, and self-examination questions, this 30-day prayer book will guide you through rich content and help you encounter greater depth in your prayer life. With the help of the Holy Spirit, the hours of prayer can be a means through which time is sanctified, communities are unified, hearts are edified, and God's transforming love is experienced.

This is a systematic theology for the clergy and alert laypersons of the many Wesleyan-Holiness denominations and parachurch groups and for United Methodism itself--as well as others who wish to know or need to know what the shape of Wesleayn-Holiness theology is. The views are supported basically from Scripture, with corroborative support from John Wesley and the Holiness Movement--and from the entire remembered past of the Church. It prefers John Wesley (a father of the church birthed later on) to the Holiness Movement on many issues, as on the witness of the Spirit. It prefers the Holiness Movement to Mr. Wesley on two important matters: entire sanctification as instantaneous only and not also gradual (although sanctification as such is gradual); and on entire sanctification's being effected by Christ's baptism with the Holy Spirit.

This work takes the basic tenets of John Wesley and states them in more contemporary terms.  An excellent resource for those who desire to understand the Wesleyan tradition.

Herein is a most discriminating study of the basic differences between historic Calvinism and Arminianism and the developments in both theological traditions that have created the mounting barriers to the understanding of each other's position. Dr. Wynkoop deals authoritatively with the critical issues, and incisively cuts through the prevalent fuzzy theological concepts, but all with delicacy and understanding. The monumental contribution of John Wesley in defining the doctrine of sanctification is a key emphasis in the book, along with the central issue of Christian assurance. Paper.
Phineas F. Bresee

Phineas Bresee dreamed of a church for all people that would lead them into a deep and fulfilling Christian life. Bresee's story celebrates the call to take the gospel to the poor, the displaced, and the marginalized.

In 1895, Phineas Franklin Bresee established in Los Angeles the first congregation of what he envisioned as a new denomination. Its purpose was to conserve and advance the doctrine and experience of entire sanctification as it had been taught in early Methodism and developed in the 19th century Holiness Movement. Just as important, he saw it as a force to minister to the poor of his day.

In Phineas F. Bresee, Carl Bangs tells the story of Bresee from his boyhood in New York's Catskill Mountains through his ministerial career in Iowa and California. Uncover the whole story of Bresee as the aggressive evangelistic pastor, editor, presiding elder, and General Conference delegate in Iowa who built churches, established a college, and engaged in business enterprise with Civil War financier Jay Cooke.

Throughout this study, Bangs places Bresee's life in the broader context of American religious history to show the emergence of a talented churchman and Methodist leader who, at age 57, stepped aside from a prominent place in Methodism to be shepherd of the holiness people.

The story of Bresee from his boyhood in New York's Catskill Mountains through his ministerial career in Iowa and California.

In this authentic biography, young readers will meet the founderof the Church of the Nazarene. An inspiring story portraying the background and history-making events leading to the formation of the church.

The official biography, fresh and moving as it was written 60 years ago by a man who knew him personally. For the last 3 years of Bresee's life, Girvin recorded Dr. Bresee's account of past events. Cloth.

What do a boy, a boxcar and a buggy have in common? Phineas F. Bresee of course! But how do these things relate together in this newly-revised biography of one of the most well-known names in Nazarene history ? You'll have to read it in order to find out! Part of a Core Value badge requirement at the Explorer Sentry level, this book tells an endearing life-story that can be appreciated by Nazarenes of all ages.

Not since apostolic times had a greater thrust of evangelism and missionary fervor been seen than during the 19th century. Inevitably this Holiness revival brought a greater awareness and interest in the work of the Holy Spirit. This volume is a compilation of testimonies, sermons, and other writings of well-known Holiness leaders such as William Adams, Aaron Lummus, Orange Scott, Phoebe Palmer, Whitall Smith, Benjamin T. Roberts, Martin Wells Knapp, Phineas Bresee, and many others. This is volume 4 in the six-volume set of Great Holiness Classics. Cloth.

Church Multiplication Endowment Fund
Give a GIFT that doesn't stop Giving!

Would you give $1.00 a month if it never stopped giving, never wore out, never changed its usefulness or purpose and transformed lives?

How many times do we give a gift to someone only to see it discarded at a later date or discover it was never used as intended? Have you ever wanted to give a gift that would never grow old or wear out, that would always be used for good and made a difference for eternity? NOW you can!

Jesus said "But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal."

Would you partner with your Northwestern Illinois District's vision to plant churches?  You might wonder how you can make a difference or even be a part. Everyone can. We need some to plant, we need everyone to pray and we need many to invest.

The Church Multiplication Endowment Fund is designed to reach unreached people living on the NWIL District for Christ. Every dollar given will continue to give in perpetuity. An endowment fund uses the interest from the principle to do kingdom work.  Will you help fund this goal?

Currently, our district property funds have been invested in planting 22 new churches these past three years and the district is in need of capital to continue to plant more! We need your help. Presently, there are 36 more potential church plants in various stages of planning which will require additional funding support.

Help us reach our GOAL of planting 300 churches by 2030.  We see 300 churches as 3,000 disciplemakers who disciple 15,000 disciples gathering with 30,000 worshippers.  Every dollar you give will continue to reach people for Christ your whole lifetime and beyond.

Would you consider a GIFT of $1.00 a month?  We are not trying to take money from your local ministry where you give your tithes and offerings. We are asking for many to give a little.  Our initial goal is 5,000 giving at least $1.00 a month. Would you be one of those 5,000 making a commitment to create a movement to plant churches that change lives?  Here are ways to give:

 1. You can give to your local church by marking your check or cash gift "NWIL CM Endowment" and your church treasurer will take it from there.

 2. You can also choose to give online if you want to set up one time or reoccurring payments using debit/credit/Electronic Check on the district website at nwilnaz.org/GIVE/ On District Church Planting or direct  CM Endowment Giving LINK. Or scan this QR code at the bottom of this article.

3. You can send a check or cash to NWIL District, 3520 Broadway St., Pekin, IL 61554 (please indicate CM Endowment on check memo)

We are also looking for those who might like to make greater kingdom investments!

You can give cash, stocks, bonds, real estate, livestock, grain, or other personal property.  Basically, any asset of marketable value can be used to help fund this endowment. There are also charitable gift annuity options that allow you to specify the endowment fund or another ministry of your choice while allowing you to receive income for your lifetime and when you pass, your gift goes to the endowment fund or specified ministry. CLICK HERE to see other ways to model generosity. Gifts can be given in memory or in honor of someone.

Large or small: Why not leave a lasting legacy that lasts more than your lifetime.
