Administrative Professionals' Week is April 25-29
Hi everyone,
As we move into spring, the weather is warming and we are finding more time for outdoor activities. Let’s take advantage of this as a way to connect and still be, as Dr. Strang says “COVID Cautious.” With rising case numbers, we need to do what we can to keep ourselves well and minimize spread for our patients and the health care system. Go out and be active but continue wearing a mask in public spaces, practice social distancing, keep your vaccinations up-to-date, and stay home and get tested when you are sick. These things are more important than ever.
This month, we celebrate several events. There are too many to name them all, but I will highlight a few. The week of April 25-29 is Administrative Professionals’ Week. I want to let our administrative staff know how grateful we are for each of you and how critical you are to the success of our department. Find a way to recognize and thank your administrative assistant and watch for noon-hour events to help celebrate our people. Don’t forget to log in for the virtual baking tutorial on April 29th at 12:15pm with Dr. Sachin Seth, winner of the 2021 Great Canadian Holiday Baking Show (details below).
We are also celebrating National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Week from April 24 – 30 this month. Last week, we celebrated Green Shirt Day on April 7th. See links below.
The Doctors Nova Scotia awards honouring exemplary achievement were announced today. Please join me in congratulating our department members who were selected to receive an award. They will be formally celebrated at a Doctors Nova Scotia event on June 4th.
Dr. Karthik Tennankore, Nephrologist – Dr. William Grigor Award
Dr. Brian Moses, Internist – Community Specialist of the Year
Dr. Hayam Hamodat, Core IM Co-Chief Resident – Outstanding Resident Award
Dr. John Hanly, Rheumatologist – DNS Senior Membership Award
In April, we have many department members celebrating important cultural and faith events such as Ramadan (April 2 - May 2), Easter (April 15-18) and Passover (April 15-23). I wish you all peace and many blessings during these times. Hayam Hamodat, one of our Co-Chief Residents for Core Internal Medicine, tweeted a lovely Ramadan message earlier this month which she agreed to share. Hopefully this weekend will lead us all into brighter, warmer, and more peaceful days.
Enjoy the great content of our newsletter and stay well.

Did you know that the Department of Medicine has 78 administrative staff supporting 204 physicians, 143 Internal Medicine and subspecialty residents, and 7 fellows?
This month, we celebrate Administrative Professionals' Week: April 25-29, 2022. Wednesday, April 27th is officially Administrative Professionals' Day. We would like to give a huge shout-out to our amazing team of administrative professionals who have continued to support the department and face the challenges of COVID over the past two years. Whether it was keeping schedules updated, adapting live sessions to Zoom, or simply offering words of encouragement and support, your presence and can-do attitude played an integral role in delivering quality patient care. The DoM management team sends a big thank you to all administrative professionals in the Department of Medicine for their dedication and hard work. We value and appreciate you.
Please take a moment to say “thank you” to your administrative team for all they do!
To further recognize the work of our administrative team, we encourage you to nominate a colleague for one of the DoM Administrative Awards. The deadline for all DoM awards has been extended to Monday, May 2, 2022. Winners will be announced at an awards event in June.
Congratulations to last year’s Administrative Professional Award recipients!

Residents rotated through 8 virtual stations, each featuring a unique case on a specific area, in increments of 10 minutes. This year 48 Internal Medicine residents and 16 DoM faculty members participated in the event which ran from 8:00 am – 3:30 pm.
A big thank you to everyone who participated in the event. The Royal College oral exam was canceled last year due to COVID, but is going ahead this year. Good luck to all of the IM PGY3s on their upcoming oral exam!
