Classic Still Life, Using all Three Shapes - Circles, Triangles and Squares

Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!
This BobBlast features a Classic Still Life Value Study - using all three of the shapes we have been playing with in the last two BobBlasts! Yep, that’s right - Circles, Triangles and Squares.

I start off with a Value Sketch - I break down the basic layout into black and white so I can see the play between the lights and darks - the highlights and shadows. I use MANY of the geometric shapes: 
•Pears - Circles and Triangles
•Wine Bottle - Square
•Wine Glass - Triangle
•Mirror - Circle
•Checkerboard table - Squares

One of the most important elements in a value study is the LIGHT SOURCE. Once I establish where the light comes from, I know where to put the lightest lights and decide where to put the focal point of the painting. This is usually at the point of the most contrast.

This BobBlast demo uses my value sketch as a jumping off point. I am using a Masterpiece Artist Canvas as the surface and Holbein orange gesso to establish the mid tone. Rather than work in black and white, I opt for the primaries - Red, Yellow and Blue plus Black and White Holbein Artist Acrylics .

The purpose of this demo is to show one of the ways to start a painting . I hear this question all the time - “How do you start?” I prefer starting loose - colorful, wet, sketching, painting - all at the same time. I believe there should be paint everywhere on the surface, all at the same time. The reason being, you constantly see how the colors relate to each other. 

Just for fun - look at your paintings and see if you can identify the structural shapes for Circles, Triangles and Squares. These shapes are essential building blocks for strong and memorable paintings. Look at Frank Webb ’s work as an example of this classic and masterful structure.
