Richelle, with her mom, Judy
|
|
After Judy suffered a stroke, it became difficult for her to pick up and answer her phone. The family came up with a way to not only talk to Judy, but see her without her having to lift a finger!
Judy's daughter, Richelle Cusick and her husband, devised a way to call Judy on her computer using both Skype and Amazon Echo; they programmed her computer to ring a few times when they are calling and then their images appear on her computer screen without Judy having to answer, push a button or click on a link.
|
|
They purchased a camera that they placed on top of her computer that displays Judy's image to the caller. The camera is strategically placed to an area of her room where she sits that does not potentially expose the caller to any personal situations. There is also an approved list of numbers that can only call Judy to ensure protection of her privacy.
Judy and her family have found this an amazing way to connect with her and enjoy seeing and chatting with her on a daily basis. Richelle said that she has a brother that lives out of state that can connect with her mom daily, as well as many grandchildren that love to see and talk with their grandma in this manner. Richelle said they have even called Judy from vacations for her to see and enjoy where they are and at her kid's sporting events so that Judy can watch them play 'live'.

Judy is a proud mother of 3 children, including Richelle, who has been a reporter on the local television news for both FOX 9 and KSTP 5. Judy said about Richelle that "it was fun to watch her on TV!" Judy is known at Manor for her lovely singing voice (she use to sing in her church choir as well as Eagan's "Women of Note" choir) and she is part of a group of residents that play chimes during our worship services here at AHS.
Judy's family hopes that by sharing their story with other families that they too may benefit from their clever way of seeing their mom and grandma every day.

#AUBURNSTRONG 2021 is a way for our staff here at AHS to have the opportunity to get to know each other better by sharing a personal hobby, unique trait, their culture or favorite pastime. The theme this year was "strength in Unity", coupled with "Strength of the team is each member, the strength of each member is the team". We asked our staff to complete a form by sharing something special about themselves; each form was then posted in our employee breakrooms where our staff could read and learn something new about their co-workers. All of our staff that participated received this year's #AUBURNSTRONG 2021 t-shirt which they proudly wear to work; perhaps you have seen it when visiting our residents?

August may be the last month of summer, but there are still plenty of activities taking place that take advantage of the sunny days.
Our residents have lots of fun activities to choose from including going to the Carver County Fair on August 12th, The Original Pancake House, Tommy's Malt Shop, MN Landscape Arboretum, pottery and painting classes, paddleboat cruise on the Mississippi river and many more!

Dear Auburn Family and Friends,
Greetings in these days of high summer in Minnesota! It is wonderful to see so many family and friends visiting in the beautiful gardens and walking paths around Auburn. I hope your gatherings with loved ones are filled with life giving moments.
We were all hoping for a better horizon in terms of the Covid-19 trajectory in our communities, but unfortunately we are seeing the need for precautions to be re-implemented in businesses, civic arenas, schools, long term care facilities, and public gatherings. As we continue to shift with the demands of this virus, we keep all those suffering with the virus in our prayers and in our hearts.
Many of us are experiencing “pandemic fatigue,” a natural response to this long-term health crisis. We want to give up, we want a rest, we want a break. Scripture offers us the example of prophet, Elijah, who also reached a point in his life where he felt so besieged he just wanted to give up. I Kings 19:4-5 tells us the following:
[Elijah] went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a solitary broom tree. He asked that he might die: “It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life, for I am no better than my ancestors.” Then he lay down under the broom tree and fell asleep.
Elijah was justified in his exhaustion. He had just defeated 450 prophets of Baal in spectacular fashion, and was fleeing for his life. He was the last of the Lord’s prophets and he was overwhelmed. The Lord responds to Elijah in his need, in a way that offers us some encouragement and insight for our own fatigue. I Kings 19:6-8 continues the story:
Suddenly an angel touched [Elijah] and said to him, “Get up and eat.” He looked, and there at his head was a cake baked on hot stones, and a jar of water. He ate and drank, and lay down again. The angel of the Lord came a second time, touched him, and said, “Get up and eat, otherwise the journey will be too much for you.” He got up, and ate and drank; then he went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb the mount of God.
The Lord sustains Elijah with some of the most basic of human needs: a nap, food, and water. One pastor has observed that Elijah was strengthened by the same things that an overtired toddler is strengthened by! There is much truth in this. Good rest, good food, and some time to ourselves is often what we need to handle feelings of fatigue.
I pray that we experience the moments of rest we need, especially as we continue to be challenged to meet the demands of each new day. The Lord will meet us in these needs as we remain faithful and open to the Lord’s guidance.
May God bless you and your families. You are all constantly in our prayers!
In the Spirit of Christ’s Love,
Pastor Jenny
