FMSP Wins Blue Ribbon Award at TRAM Annual Conference
At this year's Training Resources Applied to Mining (TRAM) Annual Conference, the Florida Mine Safety Program took home the Blue Ribbon Award for the Training Materials Competition.
Our mine safety training video, "Powered Haulage - Get Them on Board," was presented with the Blue Ribbon Award during the virtual conference held October 14-15, 2020.

Courses Offered at Northeast Florida Safety Council
The Florida Mine Safety Program has partnered with the Northeast Florida Safety Council in Jacksonville to offer Mine Safety & Health Administration classes and workshops beginning in November.
New Miner Training will be held November 12 and Annual Refresher Training is taking place November 18-20. Registration for these classes is now open. Click here for more information.
Train-the-Trainer, MSHA Law, Supervisory/Leadership and Contractor Workshops will be posted in early 2021.
New Miner Training and Annual Refresher Training courses also will be offered at a location in Lakeland, Florida beginning in December.

2021 Surface Mining Emergency Response Training and Competition
The Florida Mine Safety Program's 4th Annual Surface Mining Emergency Response Training and Competition will be held March 1-4, 2021, at the Florida Public Safety Institute, located just northwest of Tallahassee.

Meet Lee: Mining Field Analyst and Training Specialist
The Florida Mine Safety Program is excited to welcome Lee Paxton as its newest mining field analyst and training specialist!
Lee has been a certified Mine Safety & Health Administration instructor since July 2004 and a licensed EMT-paramedic with the state of Florida since 1994. She also is the owner of Central Florida Safety Training, LLC. The Mine Safety and Health Enforcement East Region Birmingham Office will have Acting District Managers Brian Thompson and Maryjo Bishop on 30-day rotations.
The mining community suffered several fatalities in 2020. MSHA investigates each mining fatality and prepares documents in order to alert the mining community and prevent similar occurrences. To learn more, click here. |

Every year, we commemorate Mine Rescue Day on October 30 to recognize the dedication and sacrifice of volunteers who risk their own lives to save other miners. We salute these brave individuals who give their time and risk their lives in the service of others.
Leaders in the mining community have penned a letter to mine rescue team members, thanking them for their dedication. The letter, which was sent out last week, is below.

The Florida Mine Safety Program (FMSP) aims to educate those who partake in mining operations by assisting mining companies and mining contractors with their health and safety training. For more than 30 years, the program has operated as a federally-funded grant program under the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), whose mission is to prevent death, disease and injuries in the mining industry. This is done through a variety of training courses, conferences and informational seminars offered by FMSP. These courses highlight proper emergency evacuation plans, health and safety standards and more. FMSP diligently works to ensure that miners working in both Florida metal and nonmetal operations are aware of the health and safety standards and are effectively trained to take precautionary measures. Through a collaborative effort, FMSP and MSHA Educational Field and Small Mine Services (EFSMS) work together to reduce the frequency and severity of mining accidents and ensure a safe environment for all.
