Yom Ha'Shoah 2022
Tonight! April 27, 6-7pm
Meet at the Pink Triangle Memorial
Sha'ar Zahav is partnering with the Eureka Valley Neighborhood Association to commemorate Yom Ha'Shoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day. Rabbi Copeland will be leading community prayer and discussion regarding the Holocaust and Cantor Bernstein will lead us in prayer and song. We will hear from survivor families including EVNA President Alex Lemberg and SZ member Eve Meyer, acknowledging the intersection between Jewish and LGBTQ+ Holocaust stories. This is an in-person only event.

Everyone Has A Story

Join the JFCS Holocaust Center and greater Bay Area community for Holocaust Remembrance Day. On April 27th, come together for a virtual reading of the names, commemoration, and community yizkor service.
6:00 pm (PT) —Ceremony and Program
We invite you on April 28th to participate in commemorative workshops, including Holocaust survivor testimony and expert-led conversations focused on the lessons and legacies of the Holocaust. Presented by the JFCS Holocaust Center in partnership with San Francisco synagogues, schools, and community organizations. Rabbi Copeland and Cantor Bernstein are both part of this online memorial service.

Children at Shabbat!
We are ready for babies and toddlers of all ages to come sing, pray and play at Shabbat services! People age 5+ need to vaccinated, boosted and masked during services and those ages 2-4 have to be masked.
We are setting up a spot just for you all with carpet, toys and easy access to the door (for when you and your folks need to step out for a minute). We would love to hear your little voices or watch you fall asleep as we spend time together welcoming Shabbat.

Bringing in the Harvest
The counting of the Omer is the way we have measured ourselves in our brit with God since ancient days. The SZ Social Action Committee is mirroring the gathering of harvest this year as part of our efforts to build awareness of ways each of us can help respond to the global refugee crisis. At the Immigration Shabbat on April 8, we published our first edition Immigration journal: Keeping the Stories Alive. We will continue to accept new stories to the journal and publish the second (and final) edition on Shavuot. We invite you to contribute to our harvest of stories. Please share your or your family's immigration story.

Kabbalistic Omer Counting
There's a Jewish tradition of "Counting the Omer", which is a ritual of counting each of the 50 days between the 2nd night of Passover (exiting slavery) and Shavuot (receiving the Torah). To see a calendar with kabbalistic (mystical) intentions, click here.

Social Action Committee

At our next meeting we will be focusing on the ballot initiative to create a vacancy tax and we will be planning our upcoming Food Banks. Nonbinary Chanting Minyan

Curious about a nonbinary way to pray? Join Rabbi Copeland in a short chanting service with entirely nonbinary Hebrew and names for the Divine. All prayers will be in transliteration or English, so come even if Hebrew is new to you. Learn more about the Nonbinary Hebrew Project that made this possible.

Trans Talmud: Androgynes and Eunuchs in Rabbinic Literature with Max K. Strassfeld

We are thrilled to be co-sponsoring Max Strassfeld's talk with Jewish Learning Works about his new book, Trans Talmud. Eunuchs and androgynes are placed at the center of rabbinic literature. 12-Step Meetings by and for Sha’ar Zahav Members

Come listen and share experience, strength, and hope with other CSZ members who identify as part of any 12-step community (AA, NA, CMA, Alanon, SA, etc.).
The meeting will be run in the usual 12-step format but will also feature some thoughts and reflections from members who are working to bring their Jewish selves and Jewish traditions to their 12-step practice. Contact Erika Katske with any questions.

Attending In-Person Events and Services
Starting at the end of April, our policy is as follows.

Shabbat Service: Masking during the service is required. Following the service, you may remove your mask to enjoy oneg.

For all other events, masking is optional. Children 2-5 will be required to mask. We welcome you to keep wearing masks if you choose.

Proof of vaccination is required, including a booster shot.
