The Unnatural Thing
In Luke 17 we read about 10 lepers who meet up with Jesus as He enters their village. They call out in a loud voice, "Jesus, Master, have pity on us!" Jesus tells them to go and show themselves to the priest. On the way, they are all healed of their leprosy. Only one of them returns to thank Jesus and give glory to God. Jesus says, "Ten were cleansed, were they not? Where are the other nine?" He then tells the one, "Stand up and go; your faith has saved you."

We are indebted to Luke for this story of the 10 lepers. It was required that the priests should give a clean bill of health to cured lepers before they could rejoin society again. As the scripture reveals, the 10 were not cured as before they started on their journey to the priests, but they were healed sometime during their journey. Only one returned to thank Jesus. Only one was grateful enough to return and say "thank you" while the other nine hurried off. Jesus asked, "where are the other nine?" It is commonly accepted that the one who returned to give thanks to Jesus was doing the natural thing, but think for a moment... what this man did was the UNNATURAL thing. The other nine did the natural thing, they forgot the very one who had cured them.

Only 10% of people are thankful to God for all His wondrous deeds and bother to thank Him. The other 90%? Probably victims of the entitlement mentality or the victim mentality. I really hope this 90-10 rule is not true. If it is, let us always - not only on this Thanksgiving Day, but always -  be a part of the 10% who give thanks in all things.

Happy Thanksgiving,
Fr. Nareg Terterian, Pastor

Thanksgiving Feast
Reported by Miss Christine Jamgotchian

On Sunday, November 24 th , St. Sarkis Church Sunday School, Saturday School & ARS Erebouni Chapter celebrated the 2 nd annual Thanksgiving Feast.  Der Nareg opened the feast with a prayer and wished everyone a Happy Thanksgiving.  In addition, he thanked all those involved with making the event successful, and a special recognition to, Apri Bezdikian, who cooked the turkeys.  Everyone can agree they were delicious!
Thanksgiving means the expression of gratitude, especially to God. As the St. Sarkis parish family enjoyed an afternoon together, the event was filled both gratitude and thanks.  Our children, especially, had a great time.
On behalf of the St. Sarkis Church Sunday School, Saturday School & ARS Erebouni Chapter, we wish you and your families a Happy and Healthy Thanksgiving.
Salt & Light Youth Group
Reported by Mrs. Nyrie Bedrossian

On Friday, November 22nd, the St. Sarkis Salt & Light Youth Group held their 4th and final session of the Fall. After the initial gathering for dinner and some socialization, the youth split up into their smaller breakout groups for religious education and discussion with their facilitators, This week's discussion was about Jesus as the Healer, reflecting on Bible stories that show the healing powers and miracles he performed. It also led into discussions about the Armenian Sacrament of Odzoum, where our priest will say a special prayer to heal the bodies of those who are sick, injured or near death.

As we wrap up our Fall session for this year, we are proud to say that our youth group has grown from 25 or so kids when we first started 3 years ago to almost 70 registered youth this Fall. We feel lucky and blessed to have the opportunity to meet with these youth twice a month and all get to know each other and our church on a more personal level. The youth seem to enjoy both the social and educational aspect of our sessions, particularly the small group discussions through which they get to know each other and their adult facilitator.

Leading into December, we have two wonderful events coming up for our youth group to celebrate the holiday season and also give back to the community. On Friday, December 13th, we have our 2nd annual joint AYF/Salt & Light Christmas Party which is for all our members and their families. Additionally, on Saturday, December 14th we have our older youth going to visit, take gifts, and do holiday crafts with the children at St. Mary's Children's Hospital in Bayside. Both of these events were started last year and met with great success, and we look forward to continuing them annually as a way to celebrate and give thanks.
Sunday School

This past Sunday, thirty-five energetic children attended Sunday School.  The lesson taught this Sunday was about "Why we should give thanks". After Church services all of the Sunday School children and their families attended our 2 nd annual Thanksgiving Feast. Everyone has a great time!
We encourage you to bring your children to Sunday School on December 8 th at 11:00am!
Interfaith Thanksgiving Service

On Monday, November 25, 2019 Zion Episcopal Church in Douglaston hosted an Interfaith Community Thanksgiving Service.
St. Sarkis Church was among the seven congregations represented. Subdeacon Roland Telfeyan represented our church. The service included recitations from the Old Testament, reflections and the singing of hymns.

This is the 5th year that St. Sarkis church participates in this Interfaith Thanksgiving Service. This is a great way to begin the holiday season praying with people of all faiths and learning about different religious traditions.  Our differences - spiritual or cultural - should unite and not divide us.

This Advent Season
An A dvent tree will proudly display the names of families or individuals who have chosen to sponsor each week's message. By making a donation during Advent of  $100.00 or more  your name will be displayed on the Advent tree. The messages of the season should be kept in our hearts all year.

Advent is a season of penitence, anticipation, and preparation. Advent serves as a reminder of the original anticipation of the birth of Christ, as well as the anticipation for Christ's return. Ideally, Advent should be a time of quiet reflection and meditation. In modern times the period leading to Christmas is far from calm, and often is stressful and frenetic. It is a good time to remember to pause and reflect on the proper observation of the birth of our Lord and Savior.

Don't get trapped in the spree of Christmas shopping this Advent season. Set your priorities straight and follow these six paths. Get rich in spirit and prepare a place in your heart for Jesus to be born.
We hope you will participate in the new initiative.
Prayerfully,
Fr. Nareg Terterian

Աստուածաշնչական Ընթերցումներ
THE FIRST EPISTLE OF ST. PAUL TO THE THESSALONIANS (4.1-12)
Finally, brothers, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more. For you know what instructions we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus.
It is God's will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God; and that in this matter no one should wrong his brother or take advantage of him. The Lord will punish men for all such sins, as we have already told you and warned you. For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. Therefore, he who rejects this instruction does not reject man but God, who gives you his Holy Spirit.
Now about brotherly love we do not need to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love each other. And in fact, you do love all the brothers throughout Macedonia. Yet we urge you, brothers, to do so more and more.
Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, just as we told you, so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.

THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO LUKE (13:1-9)
At that very time there were some present who told him about the Galileans whom blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. He asked them, "Do you think that because these Galileans suffered in this way they were worse sinners than all other Galileans? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish as they did. Or those eighteen who were killed when the tower of Siloam fall on them-do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others living in Jerusalem. No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish just as they did."
Than he told this parable: "A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it and found none. So he said to the gardener, 'See here! For three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, and still I find none. Cut it down! Why should it be wasting the soil?' He replied, 'Sir, let it alone for one more year, until I dig around it and put manure on it. If it bears fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down."

SAINTS THADDEUS AND BARTHOLOMEW
This Saturday, November 30, the Armenian Church commemorates Saints Thaddeus and Bartholomew, two of the twelve apostles who were the first evangelizers of Armenia, and were martyred there, giving the Armenian Church its apostolic identity and earning them the title, "First Enlighteners of Armenia."

Thaddeus came to Armenia about 43 AD to preach Christianity. He was martyred in southeastern Armenia. His tomb lies in the Armenian monastery of St. Thaddeus (Iran) where a chapel was built in the third century. Bartholomew is believed to have arrived in Armenia about 66 AD. He was martyred in Hadamakert, southeast of Lake Van.

An apostle is "someone who is sent,"-an emissary or ambassador of the Kingdom of God, sent to announce the Kingdom's coming in Jesus Christ, and authorized to claim men and women's allegiance to him. "We are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We beseech you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God," (2 Corinthians 5:20)
