ADVOCACY UPDATES
Farmers in Alberta are now able to recycle grain bags and twine under a three-year pilot program. AUMA is one of 20 organizations that secured funding from the Government of Alberta to operate the program and its collection sites.

Municipal leaders are invited to register for AUMA’s spring Municipal Leaders’ Caucus, which will be held at the Westin Hotel in Edmonton on March 25 and 26.
GOOD TO KNOW
The Zero Plastic Waste Initiative is a grant available to organizations, including municipalities, for projects that aim to reduce plastic waste and pollution in Canada. Funding from $25,000 to $250,000 is available from the Government of Canada. The deadline for submitting a project proposal is March 2, 2020. The Alberta Community Crime Prevention Association (ACCPA) has members from rural and urban communities, police agencies, as well as Metis and Indigenous groups. The theme for their 2020 conference in Edmonton is "Local and International Perspectives in Community Safety and Wellbeing." For more information, visit their website.

The Elected Officials Education Program is offering Council’s Role in Land Use and Development Approvals on Tuesday, March 24 at the AUMA office in Edmonton, to make it easy for those who are coming to town for Spring Municipal Leaders Caucus to attend.

The course provides participants an understanding of:
  • the provincial-municipal relationship in planning;
  • the roles of council, administration and the public in planning;
  • statutory and non-statutory plans; and
  • the land application process, including re-designation and subdivision of land, development approvals, appeals and disputes.
