August 9 Board Meeting Highlights
SMUHSD's Board of Trustees invites you to its Thursday, August 9, 2018 regular meeting. The meeting highlights include presentations on the following topics of community interest:
  • District's 2018-2019 Goals
  • Design Tech Charter School
  • Revised Facilities Use Fee
The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. at the San Mateo Adult School, 789 E Poplar Avenue, San Mateo.

Shannon Couch
BHS Teacher Honored by Burlingame Rotary Club

Congratulations to Burlingame High School's culinary arts and nutrition teacher Shannon Couch - she was recently awarded a Vic Mangini Outstanding Teacher award presented by the Burlingame Rotary Club.

MHS Grad Receives Dance Scholarship

Kiera Dorman, 2018 Mills High School graduate received a $10,000 scholarship from New York City Dance Alliance to attend UC Irvine. 


SMUHSD Recognized For Top Schools

Four San Mateo Union High School District Schools earned 
top marks from Niche.

San Mateo, Aragon, Mills and Burlingame High Schools landed among California's 100 best public high schools for 2019, according to a new set of rankings released by Niche.com this week.

The rankings were released as part of Niche's 2019 K-12 rankings.

Meet SMUHSD New Hires

The San Mateo Union High School District recently announced the addition of new District Office staff members.

Julia Kempkey, Ed.D., Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction

Julia began her administrative career in 2010 when she accepted a job as a school site administrator in Novato Unified School District. During her eight years in NUSD, she served at both high schools, Novato High School and San Marin High School before moving to the district office as the Director of Instructional Technology. From there, she moved into the Instruction department where she served as the Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Innovation for the last five years. 

Julia joined SMUHSD as Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction in July 2018.
 
John Bartfield, Assistant Director of Special Education
John has worked in the field of special education for over 20 years.  He began his career in the classroom as a special education teacher for five years, worked as a school psychologist for ten years, and most recently as Director of Special Education in the San Mateo-Foster City School District for six years.  In his role as Assistant Director of Special Education, John will work alongside Carolyn Schwartzbord to provide leadership to the special education department and support for the District's special education program, students and staff.


Laura Chalkley, Manager of
Communications 
Laura began her career in public sector communications 20 years ago. She served in communications roles at the City of Ventura, the San Diego Association of Governments and the Oceanside Unified School District in San Diego County, where she was the Director of Communications. 

Laura joined SMUHSD from Cleveland, OH where she worked as a Communications Consultant for Burges & Burges Strategists. While at B&B, Laura helped school clients conduct and analyze in-depth research to develop strategic communications initiatives.

GATE Parents Group Presents Free Seminar on College Success

The  GATE Parents Group Speaker Series presents a free seminar on September 12: 

"College Success Starts BEFORE College"
 
This free seminar for students and parents explains:
  • How to use college to advance yourself
  • How to find the right college for you
  • How to build your college resume
  • Strategies for college applications 

Presenter Robert Levine, CEO/Founder of  University Consultants of America,  is a Harvard graduate with three decades of experience interviewing for Harvard. Bob has published over 100 articles and has lectured throughout the United States and around the world about college admissions.
