Regular Meeting

Dawn Livingston, President, called the meeting to order. She thanked everyone who has helped the District remain in school this past year, including families and educators, our District nurses, and buildings and grounds personnel.

Trisha Kocanda, Superintendent, thanked all who participated in recent conferences. She noted that over 1,000 students and parents, and over 250 staff, shared insights via the District's recent survey, and this data will help target improvement efforts. Another survey will be administered this winter to monitor the impact of our efforts. Dr. Kocanda also thanked the Winnetka Public Schools Foundation for supporting microgrants to enhance the student experience in our schools. Finally, she recognized the extraordinary efforts of the District's principals in honor of National Principals Week.

Presentation

Trisha Kocanda, Superintendent, Central Office Administrators and Principals, shared an update on health and safety efforts, metrics monitoring, teaching and learning, and a communication timeline as the District evaluates next steps. Recent parent, staff, and student survey findings were discussed along with prioritized areas for refinement. Student and staff safety and maximizing in-person instruction continue to be prioritized, as the District closely evaluates health metrics (updated weekly). Due to several health and logistical factors, it was affirmed that the District is committed to remaining in the current hybrid remote model at least through winter break in December, as long as the health metrics allow in-person learning.  Families are also now able to select their preference for the hybrid remote model or the remote learning model for the second trimester.

The Board received an update on the continued relationship maintained with Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL), in which this year's focus will be supporting our SEL Coaches in their ability to provide staff and parents resources to support the social emotional well-being of students.

The Board previously opted to delay this childcare program for families and reevaluate interest this fall, as the minimum number of students required to staff program options at student home schools was not met. At this time, no new registrations have been submitted. The District's partnership with Right at School is, however, currently supporting the needs of staff members for childcare options and available to pivot for families when there is sufficient interest.

The Policy Subcommittee reviewed a number of School Board policies and provided recommendations for updates. A 2nd read of policies and vote to adopt the recommendations will occur at the November 24, 2020, Board Meeting.

The Consent Agenda and the following Action Items were approved:
