From Fr. Christopher Wilkerson
From time to time, in and amongst and through the hustle and the bustle of serving in parish ministry, in between questions of how many bulletins to print up for which services, questions about the days and times that various ministry team members can arrange to meet, questions about who’s making sure the church buildings are open when they need to be open and locked up when they need to be locked up, and questions about hundreds of even more important subjects (such as how to make sure we know and respond to the pastoral needs of everyone in our church family, or how to respond to the material needs of the poor and hungry in our community), there will very occasionally arise a question of a more cosmic and existential nature.

From the Youth Minister, Erin Wolf

Stephen Ministry:
Bringing Christ's healing love to hurting people
A Hug from God

On an airplane trip some time ago, I happened to sit next to a young man who served our country in Iraq as a bomb specialist, training and working with Iraqi soldiers to defuse bombs. His being alive and sitting next to me was the result of many hours of surgery to save his life after a bomb exploded nearby, causing shrapnel to pierce his protective suit and almost kill him. His injuries and extreme loss of blood were such that he was immediately flown to an army hospital in Germany for numerous surgeries, including emergency surgery during the flight to the hospital. His wife visited with their newborn son as he spent many months of recovery there.

Lingering symptoms he was experiencing included phantom pain in his legs, and as we spoke about the challenge of pain, we also talked about having faith. The veteran mentioned that ever since his accident, he always found a church to attend on Sundays, no matter where he happened to be. He had never been a church-goer before, but one aspect of his near-death experience was an awe-inspiring and humbling awareness of God’s presence, and this was his way of ensuring he would never forget that.

When I asked him if he would mind describing to me how he experienced God’s presence, he was quiet for several moments, and I hoped that I hadn’t asked too personal of a question. He assured me that I had not; it was just that he was searching for a way to describe it, since he hadn’t put it in words before. He then said that during the moment when he almost died, it was as if he was being enveloped by love and being given a big hug by God.

He still had many challenges to address in his life. He was now traveling to begin a new job in a different city, where his wife and son would be meeting him and where they planned to start anew. He loved being a father and cherished his son, and was hopeful that he and his wife would successfully navigate their life together. In any event, he knew that God would be alongside him whatever the future might hold.
