Last weekend, Palmetto’s historic playoff run ended in a hard fought battle. Miami Palmetto- The Regional Champs!!- went the farthest our team has ever gone. We are BEYOND PROUD of our fantastic players and coaches.

FREE Covid Testing for Children:
M-DCPS Partners with University of Miami Health System to Offer COVID-19 Testing for Children:
Testing is one of the most important tools available in stopping the spread of COVID-19. That is why Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) has partnered with University of Miami Health System to support its efforts to provide free COVID-19 testing to all children, ages 4-18 in Miami-Dade County. Testing will be done through the Health System’s Pediatric Mobile Unit, which will be available in various school parking lots over Winter Recess.
Below are the dates and locations for the mobile unit testing, taking place from 9:00 a.m. – noon and 1:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.

A parent/guardian must accompany their child for testing. Walk-ups are welcome, but appointments are encouraged. Appointments may be made by calling 305-243-2059.
January testing dates and locations will also be made available in the near future.

Magnet School Applications:
M-DCPS Accepting Magnet School Applications Until Jan. 15, 2021
Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) is currently accepting applications for Magnet programs for the 2021-2022 school year. The enrollment period for Magnet programs across the school district opened in October and runs through January 15, 2021.
Students will have the opportunity to enjoy more than 380 innovative Magnet programs, personalized to meet their interests, talents and individual needs. Among the offerings included are programs such as Visual & Performing Arts, Medical, Gaming & Animation, Forensic Sciences, Zoology, Robotics & Artificial Intelligence, Law & Legal Studies.
To be added to the random selection process, students MUST apply before January 15, 2021, at www.miamimagnets.org. The online application process is fast and easy. Each child can apply for up to five schools. Notification letters will be sent out after the random selection period around March 15, 2021, at which point parents can either accept or decline the admission offer.
Magnets foster diverse and equitable learning environments, incorporating innovative curriculum and research-based teaching methods. They monitor accountability for continuous improvement and student achievement. Studies show a strong connection between Magnet programs and workforce needs. Magnet schools are designed to provide real-world learning opportunities through rigorous curriculum and with the support of partners such as Zoo Miami, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Gardens, Bloomberg Financial, colleges, and universities, who are committed to student success.

M-DCPS Provides Additional Supports to Struggling Students:
Throughout this pandemic, Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) has worked diligently to offer students a traditional school house model of learning and an innovative, robust virtual learning experience. The Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) recently issued an emergency order requiring educational interventions for students enrolled in My School Online (MSO) who are not making adequate progress and may be falling behind, especially at-risk students. Nearly all facets of the Emergency Order were previously being addressed by the District.
While creating safeguards and maintaining critical flexibility, the order addresses the academic requirements for the spring semester, which begins January 25, 2021. It also maintains a parent’s right to choose the educational option that best fits the needs of their family, including innovative learning options that guarantee a full array of services for at-risk students. Additionally, students transitioned out of MSO, due to making inadequate progress, must be given additional interventions and supports.
The District has identified students who are not on-track to meet grade expectations in one or more subject areas. This puts them at risk for course failure and/or retention and may have long-lasting negative effects on their future academic performance. The District is sending a letter, both through U.S. mail and through various electronic means, to the parents/guardians of these identified students requesting that students return to in-person learning to receive additional academic supports, per the requirement outlined in the Emergency Order. A parent opting to keep their child(ren) in MSO must provide written confirmation that they do not want their child to return to in-school learning, despite academic challenges being faced by their child(ren).

Free Grab and Go Meals at the Library:
December 4 – 29, 2020
Adults may pick up the meals without the child being present by providing one of the following for each child receiving meals:
- Student ID
- Report card or progress report
- Student Portal access
- Birth certificate
- Insurance card
- VPK registration
Adults can also receive more than one box of meals by providing identification for each child.

FREE Tutoring from Tutoring for Tomorrow:
Mu Alpha Theta, Science National Honor Society, and Social Science Honor Society have partnered to tutor Palmetto students in math, science, or social science every Wednesday over zoom from 3-4 p.m. Wednesday tutoring is completely FREE and open to all subject levels. Testing Updates for All Students:
- MSO 11th grade students will test for the FSA ELA in Feb/March 2021.
- 11th grade PHYSICAL students who were under quarantine during the FSA ELA testing dates and those who missed it for other reasons, will report to the Media Center Computer Lab room 2109 on December 1st, 2nd, and 3rd at 7:30 a.m. (3-day test). Students will go to their first period of the day-take attendance- report to Media Lab. Do not wait for an individual testing pass, just come to the Computer lab on December 1st and I will give everyone a testing pass.
- Second wave of Retakes for FSA ELA seniors will be at end of December (pending schedule).
- PSAT/NMSQT- Testing date is January 26, 2021
- All 10th graders will take the PSAT/NMSQT. The district pays for all 10th graders so there is not need to register or purchase it.
- 11th grade students will be able to purchase the PSAT/NMSQT starting on 12/1/20-12/11/20. Limited number of seats. This window will close early if all seats are sold out. Payments will be via OSP, found in the apps/services section of the student/parent portal.
- 9th graders, will be able to purchase PSAT/NMSQT place between 12/14/20-12/17/20. Limited number of seats. This window will close early if all seats are sold out. Payments will be via OSP, found in the apps/services section of the student/parent portal.
- I will re-post any information for the PSAT/NMSQT if purchasing dates change.
- Physical 10th graders will be given a PSAT/NMSQT study guide by their Language Arts teacher in December.

The Miami Palmetto Senior’s PTSA school store is operated by Sharingwear.org, a charitable organization founded and operated by Nicole Markus, a Palmetto High senior. Sharingwear’s Palmetto Senior Online Store is the sole PTSA/school source to buy dress code shirts for Palmetto Senior as the Palmetto Senior PTSA does not operate a physical store at school. All clothing featured on Sharingwear’s Palmetto Senior Online Store are approved by Miami Palmetto Senior High as qualified dress code attire.
Designs can be purchased in multiple clothing styles (tshirts, sweatshirts, etc.) and some designs are available in multiple colors. Orders are custom printed and take 2-3 weeks for delivery. Several great new designs have been added.
All profits from Sharingwear’s Palmetto Senior Online Store are shared 50% with the Palmetto Senior PTSA and 50% with Sharingwear’s Charity of the Month.
