New! Information for Prevention Certification

The CPI team is committed to supporting the professional development of California's prevention field. The new Information for Prevention Certification webpage provides information about the following :
  • Answers to frequently asked questions about using CPI trainings for new or renewal California Certified Prevention Specialist (CCPS) applications;
  • The updated CPI Training Matrix simplifies seeing which CPI trainings fulfill the education requirements for the California Certified Prevention Specialist application; and
  • Centralized information about earning Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for CPI trainings.
Publication
Focus Groups: Helpful Tools for Strategic Prevention Planning
 
The CPI team is pleased to announce this new publication developed in response to requests from the field. Part 1 provides background information about focus groups - what they are, the reasons to use them, and their advantages and disadvantages. Part 2 describes the process and strategies for conducting focus groups, recruiting focus group participants, ensuring participant attendance, facilitating well, and analyzing focus group data. Part 3 includes sample questions to utilize during focus groups. "Focus Groups: Helpful Tools for Strategic Prevention Planning" was developed by CPI consultant Charlie Seltzer.

Register: 2018 Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Statewide Conference
 
The California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Statewide Conference will be held August 21-23 in Garden Grove, California. This is an opportunity to network and learn about the important issues and trends affecting SUD prevention, treatment, and recovery. The conference program balances valuable workshops and sessions for county leaders, SUD treatment providers, counselors, prevention groups, SUD researchers and academics, SUD policymakers and advocates, community organizations, and those in recovery. Presentation topics related to prevention will include opioid use disorder prevention, substance-exposed pregnancy prevention, suicide prevention, integrating HIV and Hepatitis C testing into prevention settings, and more.
 
Register: National Prevention Network (NPN) Conference
 
The National Prevention Network will hold the 31st Annual NPN Conference in Boston, Massachusetts, on August 28-30, 2018. This year's theme is "A Revolution in Prevention: Understanding the Past, Informing the Future." Presentations will address evidence-based programs, strategies, and emerging practices; prevention workforce development; marijuana, opioids, or prescription drug abuse; substance abuse prevention collaboration with related fields; drug trends and emerging trends; and underage drinking and young adult or college drinking.
 
New Opioids Section in Prevention Collaboration in Action Toolkit
 
SAMHSA's Center for the Application of Prevention Technologies (CAPT) added a new "Focus on Opioids" section to its online collaboration toolkit. This new section of the toolkit features stories from around the country of successful collaborative efforts to prevent opioid misuse and overdose. Accompanying tools offer tips for establishing and maintaining effective partnerships to respond to the unique challenges presented by the opioid crisis.

Online Training Series 
The first five courses of CPI's Professional Competencies, the Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) Competencies, are available on the CPI online courses website: https://ca-cpi.training/. The five SPF Competencies are Assessment, Capacity Building, Planning, Implementation, and Evaluation.

Learners can take the SPF Competencies individually to build proficiency in particular SPF steps, or as a complete series in which the five courses build on one another.

Quiz questions are included as an element of the online courses. Learners who complete the trainings and pass the integrated quizzes can receive a certificate of completion for professional development or continuing education purposes.
